Weyburn Beavers

Fans at Tom Laing Park got a little bit of everything Thursday night: a pitchers’ duel, home runs, and a thrilling finish. Halen Otte would hit an RBI double to left field in the 11th inning as the Weyburn Beavers walked off the Medicine Hat Mavericks 4-3.  

The Weyburn Beavers held the lead for most of the game last night against the Okotoks Dawgs, but errors would give the Dawgs an opening in the later innings. Over the final three innings, the visitors would score six runs to jump out to a 9-3 win over the Beavers.  

The Weyburn Beavers found themselves up against the top team in the WCBL Tuesday night, as the Okotoks Dawgs opened a two-game set with the Beavers at Tom Laing Park. The two teams would be evenly matched until the 7th inning when Okotoks scored four runs to take the lead and held on for an 8-5 victory.  

The Weyburn Beavers returned to action after the WCBL All-Star Game Monday night with a doubleheader in Saskatoon. The Beavers would come out on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the opening game of the day falling 5-3, but bounced back in the second game with a 7-3 win.  

It was a strong showing for the Weyburn Beavers at the WCBL All-Star game in Okotoks on Saturday.  

The Beavers had five representatives on the East Division squad. Niko Kekatos, Ian Heck, Ryan Muizelaar, Halen Otte, and Owen McConnell were all dressed in the game, with four of the players making an appearance.  

The Weyburn Beavers were looking to make it two wins in a row over the Swift Current 57s Thursday night when the teams took to the field at Tom Laing Park Thursday night. Swift Current’s Jose Ayala had different ideas, however. He would finish the game a triple short of the cycle and drove in four runs to help power the 57s to a 9-5 victory, avenging Weyburn’s 8-5 win Tuesday night.  

The Weyburn Beavers found themselves down by four runs when they came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday night against the Swift Current 57s. Some timely hits, though, would turn the tide. Niko Kekatos and Halen Otte would both go yard in the 7th inning, with Kekatos’ being a two-run no-doubter to left field and Otte’s a towering blast to right-centre, as the Beavers would rally to overcome the deficit and go on to an 8-5 victory.  

The Weyburn Beavers were at home at Tom Laing Park for a pair of games on the weekend, as the Regina Red Sox came to town on Friday, and then the Saskatoon Berries paid a visit on Sunday.  

In the game Friday, the Red Sox took an early lead and held on, keeping the Beavers off the basepaths as best they could, before blowing the game open with two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pick up an 8-1 win.  

The Weyburn Beavers snapped their 17-game losing skid spectacularly Tuesday night. Ian Heck went 7 2/3 innings on the mound, striking out ten, and allowing just one run, as Niko Kekatos and Robert Gurney both hit two-run home runs in the sixth inning as the Beavers beat the visiting Regina Red Sox 5-1.  

The Weyburn Beavers found themselves down early in Monday night’s game against the Medicine Hat Mavericks, and while they were able to stop the bats of the visitors eventually, it would be too late, as the Mavericks went on to an 11-2 victory.
