Weyburn Beavers

The Weyburn Beavers bounced back in a big way Saturday night, outlasting the Moose Jaw Miller Express in a 19-16 slugfest at Ross Wells Park.

Weyburn entered the contest following a 5-0 shutout loss at home to the Regina Red Sox, but their bats came alive early and often in Moose Jaw. The Beavers put up crooked numbers in three straight innings, scoring five in the 3rd, three in the 4th, five more in the 5th, and another four in the 7th, en route to a 19-run, 16-hit offensive outburst.

The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Weyburn Beavers return to Tom Laing Park this Thursday, officially kicking off the collegiate baseball season. 

Head coach for the Beavers Cam Williams says the team is excited to start the action. Players arrived in town yesterday from across Canada and the United States yesterday, on the tails of their college ball seasons.  

“Obviously a lot of guys had really good school ball years, but overall summer ball is just a different ball game to use the term. The guys are just really excited.” 

The Weyburn Beavers Baseball Club is looking for the community's help as they gear up for the 2025 baseball season.

Brittany Sparwood is the billet coordinator for the Beavers, she says one way families can help is by becoming a billet family.

"The billet family is a family that lives in the community of Weyburn that takes in a player for the season. They provide them a place to sleep, have food available for them to make, as well as be essentially the family that they don't have while they're away from their own family."

The Weyburn Beavers are preparing for the fast-approaching baseball season, this includes finding billet families for the players on their roster.

The annual Weyburn Beavers Sports Dinner saw another successful fundraiser on Saturday. President of the Weyburn Beavers Baseball Club, Garnet Hansen says this year’s event has been one of their most successful since they had the first one in 2017.  

“If not the best, it'll be really, really close to being the best in terms of profit, so couldn't be happier. I think the community really stepped up. The revenue streams at the 50-50, both the silent and the live auction went really, really well and I mean, liquor sales were good, too.” 

The Weyburn Beavers held their annual Sports Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, hosting guest speakers Sportsnet Central baseball analyst Jamie Campbell and former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher John Axford.

The event saw a strong turnout and featured a silent and live auction. They also revealed the new Weyburn Beavers logo and jersey design for the upcoming season. Campbell and Axford were given the first two hats with the new logo, the third was sold in the live auction. 

Despite controlling the pace of play for the majority of the game, and outshooting the visiting Melfort Mustangs, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings would run into a hot goalie, and ended up falling 2-1 at Crescent Point Place Saturday night. 

"This was a much better effort than last weekend, and I truly do believe that things are going the right way here," Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes said after the game. "We're disappointed in the outcome; we're definitely not disappointed in the effort and the details."

The game last night between the Weyburn Beavers and the Swift Current 57s had the potential to see some record-breaking moments. The two teams combined for 31 runs – the 2nd most runs scored in a WCBL game at Tom Laing Park, and the 4th most in the league this season – as the Beavers outlasted the visitors for a 17-14 victory. Weyburn’s Ryan Dauphinee also entered the game two hits from setting a new franchise record for career hits.  

The Weyburn Beavers carried the momentum from their win at home Tuesday into Regina last night and came away with a big win over the Red Sox. Thanks in part to a seven-run 4th inning, which included a grand slam from River Smith, the Beavers beat the Red Sox 14-11.  

The Weyburn Beavers have now won three consecutive games at home after a thrilling 5-4 extra-innings win over the Saskatoon Berries last night. 

“I think, you know, pitchers kept us in it,” said Beavers head coach Cam Williams after the game. “They did really well. Defense was really sharp too, and although the bats weren’t there to start, they really kind of figured it out and clicked at the end there. Overall, a really big team win.”
