NDP leadership to begin in September, new leader chosen no later than March 29

The NDP's leadership race to replace Jagmeet Singh will formally begin in September, with a six-month race to follow according to a rules framework adopted by the party's national council.

A new leader will be chosen no later than March 29, when the party holds its 2026 convention in Winnipeg.

An entry fee of $100,000 has been set for candidates to show their "organizational and fundraising capacity."

Debates and other leadership events hosted by the party will be streamed online in both official languages, according to the framework.

Salvation Army thanks community; highlights urgent food needs

The Salvation Army in Portage la Prairie is seeing strong community support, but there are still a few key items they’re hoping to restock.

Salvation Army Auxiliary Lieutenant Justina Hammill says donations continue to roll in from local organizations, churches, and individuals.

“We get donations every week from different groups,” notes Hammill. “We get donations from McCains, we get donations from Good Shepherd Church. Once a month, they pick a different food item to collect each month. We get just random people in the community who just pop by to give us food.”

Decorative lights set to brighten Royal Road South

A key stretch of Royal Road in Portage la Prairie is set to get a brighter, safer look thanks to a $5,000 grant.

The Holiday Avenue committee received the funding through the Revitalize Portage Grants program, which is administered by the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) and funded by the Government of Manitoba.

Mari Kozar, executive director of the PCRC, notes the grant supports the group’s Light Up Royal Road South project. The initiative extends decorative star lighting from Saskatchewan Avenue to the Causeway.

"We're going to be asking Manitobans to be helping out in a number of ways," Kinew told a news conference.

"We want to underscore just how serious this wildfire season is."
