'Mercy of politics': Canadian farmers weigh plans as Chinese tariff hits canola price
As Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products continue to hamper the cash price of one of the country's most valuable crops, farming experts say producers have big decisions ahead of them.
Market analyst Chuck Penner with LeftField Commodity Research said while future prices are down slightly, the cash price farmers receive for their canola, also known as the basis, is much lower.
Doctors urge families to prep for more than just class as virus season nears
Backpacks are packed, lunchboxes are filled, and school buses are about to hit the road, but local health officials are reminding families not to forget one more important item before the first bell rings.
Dr. Davinder Singh, Medical Officer of Health with Southern Health–Santé Sud, says the return to school is a timely opportunity for parents and caregivers to review their children's vaccination records, especially in light of a recent uptick in measles cases across Manitoba.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during construction, but will return to two-way traffic outside of work hours. The project is expected to take approximately two weeks, with delays likely for drivers in the area.

Carman’s Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts are preparing to launch their weekly meetings this month, offering children and teens a combination of outdoor adventures, practical skills, and opportunities to give back to their community.
The program welcomes youth ages 5 to 17, with a focus on building confidence, teamwork, and leadership.
Eric Melvin, a leader with the group, notes, “The Beavers is your entry level into Scouts Canada. It’s a good program just to get some very introductory skills to what scouting is all about.”
Naloxone training shared with youth in Portage
Amber Beaulieu, network coordinator for the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network, visited the Portage la Prairie Youth Hub this week to speak with youth about sexual health, rising cases of syphilis, and overdose prevention.
Beaulieu notes that International Overdose Awareness Day took place on August 31, and her team hosted a local event. She says speaking with youth in advance is an important way to raise awareness.
Cartier reeve urges vigilance after heavy rainfall
Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Cartier, Christa Vann Mitchell, says August 20th's heavy rains left a trail of damage, raising concerns for local farmers trying to reach their fields.
While some areas west of Portage la Prairie fared better, places closer to the La Salle River struggled with sewer backups and flooding. She explains that the unexpected rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, partly because sump pumps and weeping tiles in many homes feed directly into municipal sewers.
