Largest wildfire in eastern Newfoundland has destroyed up to 100 homes: officials

Officials say the largest wildfire burning in Newfoundland and Labrador may have destroyed up to 100 homes and structures.

However, Premier John Hogan says it is still too dangerous for crews to get into the area to complete an accurate tally.

The fire burning along the northwestern shore of Conception Bay began on Aug. 3 near Kingston, N.L.,  and Hogan says it now measures more than eight square kilometres.

RCMP arrest Stony Mountain man after vehicle theft in Lac du Bonnet

A vehicle reported stolen from a business on Prairie Road in the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet was located in Winnipeg on Tuesday, August 12, thanks to a coordinated effort between local and provincial police teams.

The incident began around 2:00 p.m., when RCMP officers from Whitemouth were monitoring Highway 11 for the stolen vehicle. They spotted it turning onto the highway from Road 502, but were unable to stop it at the time safely. Officers chose not to pursue the vehicle directly and continued their investigation through other means.

Heavy fog blamed in train collision in southeast Manitoba

Two semi-trucks and a train were involved in a Wednesday morning collision that shut down Highway 23 near Dufrost.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded at 7:28 a.m. on August 13 to the crash on Highway 23 at Road 18 East, in the Rural Municipality of DeSalaberry.

A westbound semi-truck tried to stop at the train crossing but couldn’t in time. The driver swerved into the north ditch to avoid hitting the train. The 57-year-old driver from the RM of Montcalm was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Canola industry calls on Federal Government for immediate support

Starting today China is implementing a 75.8 per cent duty on Canadian canola seed imports.

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced the preliminary ruling regarding their anti-dumping investigation earlier this week. 

The latest tariff on canola seed is in addition to the 100 per cent tariff implemented on Canadian oil and meal back in March 2025.

President and CEO of the Canola Council of Canada, Chris Davison, says China is a highly valued and important market for us, noting they were disappointed with the preliminary ruling.

Preliminary search of Winnipeg landfill for victim of serial killer underway: Kinew

The Manitoba government has begun its "test phase" search of a Winnipeg landfill for the remains of a victim of a convicted serial killer.

Premier Wab Kinew said Wednesday the preliminary search of the city-run Brady Road landfill for the remains of Ashlee Shingoose started this week. 

"We began the pilot test phase ... this is basically the excavation and taking a look at the material to try and figure out what is the actual process of the search going to look like," he said. 

CSO-RCMP collaboration shows results in Portage crime stats

Calls for service to the Community Safety Officer (CSO) program in Portage la Prairie are on the rise, reflecting growing community engagement and demand for support.

At the August 11 city council meeting, Caitlyn Saindon, manager of the CSO program, told council the office responded to 108 calls in the first quarter (Jan-Mar 2025), compared with 197 in the second (April-June 2025). She notes this demonstrates “a significant upward trend in activity and awareness.”

From the ground up: Carman-Dufferin firefighters transform training site

The dream of an updated training site continues to take shape for members of the Carman-Dufferin Fire Department (CDFD).

It all began about 6 years ago when the old and unsafe facility was demolished, explained Fire Chief Chris Lemky. A grant through the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) also helped pay for the site to be levelled, graveled and fenced in. The department was also able to purchase and set up few sea containers, which are used to light fires and practice different firefighting, search and rescue, high-angle rescue and ladder techniques.

MacGregor coach surprised with national recognition from Hockey Canada

A local hockey coach is receiving national recognition for her dedication to youth sports. Kaley Nicoll Kehler, a longtime coach in the MacGregor Minor Hockey Association and a recent assistant with the Central Plains AA female team, was recently surprised with an award from Hockey Canada and BFL Canada.

Kehler learned about the honour in an unexpected way.
