Disability rights groups launch Charter challenge against MAID law

A coalition of disability rights organizations has launched a Charter challenge against a part of Canada's law on medical assistance in dying, calling it an "abandonment” of people with disabilities. 

The group announced Thursday that it had filed a notice of application to challenge what's known as track two of the MAID law, which it argues has resulted in premature deaths.

Students still reeling after first few weeks of cell phone ban

As cell phones in the classroom become a thing of the past, students are longing for the good old days.

Meghan Jadeske, a Grade 11 student at Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI), believes that if students are following the rules, they shouldn't be included in the cell phone ban.

"I like listening to music in class because it helps me focus, but now I can't."

Portage la Prairie Soup Kitchen grand opening on the way

A local Soup Kitchen is hoping to let the community know that they're available for those in need.

The grand opening of the new Portage la Prairie Soup Kitchen is taking place on September 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Highway Pentecostal Church.

Coordinator Shelley Burton says they initially opened the soup kitchen in May of this year but are holding this grand opening to raise awareness of its existence.

Portage driver issued multiple tickets for speeding 145 km/h in a 100 zone

An 18-year-old from Portage la Prairie is facing the consequences after being caught speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway last week.

According to the Central Plains RCMP Weekly Report, a Portage officer was patrolling Highway #1 near the city on September 18 when the officer observed a vehicle passing other vehicles at a high rate of speed.

The officer used radar to verify the vehicle's speed and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was travelling at 145 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in dense fog and without daytime running lights.
