Conservation officers are continuing enforcement to protect Manitoba’s natural resources through a variety of enforcement activities across the province with a dedicated effort against illegal night lighting, and commercial and sport fishing patrols.

Highlights from provincial hunting enforcement statistics for July 1 to Dec. 16, 2022, include:

• conservation officers conducted 131-night patrols designed to stop illegal night hunting activities, 36 of which utilized aircraft. 

Winnipeg ICE goaltender Daniel Hauser made 23 saves in a 2-0 victory over the Saskatoon Blades Friday night at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena.

Hauser, now with a personal record of 20-2 this season, earned his second shutout this year and 10th of his career.

Evan Friesen and Ty Nash scored for the ICE (27-5).

Winnipeg out shot Saskatoon 24-23. Ethan Chadwick suffered the loss in goal for Saskatoon (25-6), ending their 10 game winning streak.

The ICE failed to score on their lone power play while the Blades went 0/3.

A thick blanket of fog is creeping across the border from the U.S.A. Saturday morning, prompting Environment Canada to issue warnings in the southwest. However, many regions are experiencing reduced visibility, including parts of Winnipeg. 

Mild temperatures and high humidity have also combined to make ice crystals throughout much of southern Manitoba. 

The temperature is expected to hold steady around -7 for Winnipeg throughout Saturday. The fog is also expected to lift later this morning. 

Mild temperatures are expected to remain into the start of next week.

Clarence Hoffort said typical staples on the calendar, such as Stoughton Daze, were able to proceed unfettered by COVID-19 regulations, which helped boost community spirit.

A few new businesses started up in the town of about 650 residents, which Hoffort said was a positive, along with houses in the community being purchased.

Mayer, Donald H.

1944 - 2022

With grieving hearts the family wishes to announce that Donald H. Mayer late of Estevan, Sask. passed away after a very long and courageous battle with cancer at the St. Joeseph’s Special Care Home in Estevan on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at the age of 78 years.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Estevan, Sask. Donations in Donald's memory may be made through donate.jw.org.

Four people are fortunate to have escaped a home safely after an undetected carbon monoxide leak in their home on Boxing Day.

The City of Winnipeg says in a release that they were called to a home on Redwood Avenue for a medical emergency around 7:20 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, portable carbon monoxide alarms worn by WFPS members sounded due to high levels of carbon monoxide in the house.

Firefighters evacuated the home and everyone got out safely. 

If you've had a potted poinsettia before but did not have the best of luck with it, you're likely not alone.

Carla Hrycyna, Host of the Lawn and Garden Journal, says the plant which grows naturally in Mexico loves heat, and can be difficult to care for once they're potted.

"There are people that can take their Poinsettia from one season to the other. You will see that sometimes they will drop some leaves naturally on the bottom portion of it, but as we progress into the summer months, put that poinsettia outside."

Winnipeg emergency crews were kept busy on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning after four separate fires, including one at an apartment building where occupants, including residents with disabilities, required rescuing.
