Over $300K in stolen goods, drugs seized in rural Rocky View raid
A 64-year-old Rocky View County man is facing multiple charges after Cochrane RCMP seized more than $300,000 in stolen property — including high-value medical lasers — and a quantity of illicit drugs during a raid on a rural property.
The search took place on July 15 and stemmed from intelligence received from the RCMP Auto Theft Unit.
Inclusive Jumpstart Court opens in Cochrane, a first for Alberta
Cochrane has officially opened Alberta’s first accessible multi-sport Jumpstart Court made possible through a partnership between Jumpstart Charities and the Town of Cochrane.
The new play space is designed to eliminate physical and social barriers to sport, ensuring children of all abilities can enjoy inclusive, shared spaces. It offers barrier-free access, enhanced visibility, and accommodates both accessible and traditional sports such as basketball, sitting volleyball, pickleball, and wheelchair tennis.
Family violence, B&Es, thefts keep Cochrane RCMP busy in June
Cochrane RCMP say June was a busy month for local policing, with more than 600 calls for service and a continued focus on preventing family violence, property crime, and impaired driving.
Insp. Dave Brunner, says officers responded to 609 calls in June, including five break-and-enters, three vehicle thefts, and 25 cases involving family violence.
“Three vehicle thefts might sound low, but it’s still too many, especially when people are making it easy by leaving vehicles accessible,” said Brunner. “We’re reminding everyone to lock up and remove valuables.”

Cochrane’s Bauer inks new deal with Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed Cochrane defenceman Tyrel Bauer to a one-year, two-way contract worth US$775,000 at the NHL level.
Bauer, 23, recorded two assists and 105 penalty minutes over 59 games last season with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.
If reassigned to the AHL team, he's guaranteed $125,000.
Bauer was honoured as Manitoba’s IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year for 2024–25, recognizing his outstanding community contributions. He also earned the Moose’s EPRA Julian Klymkiw Community Service Award and the Richard Bue Ultimate Teammate Award.
Town joining greater Calgary economic development pilot
Cochrane has signed a memorandum of understanding to join the three-year Invest Greater Calgary (IGC) pilot project, aimed at boosting economic development across the region.
Invest Greater Calgary is a voluntary regional collaboration involving eight municipalities within the Calgary Metropolitan Region. It focuses on promoting the region as a unified and competitive destination for investment. A regional secretariat will be established to support investment attraction and job creation.
RCMP arrest alleged hijacker at Vancouver airport after airspace shut down
RCMP say they've arrested the pilot of a small aircraft that was allegedly hijacked from Victoria and flown to Vancouver International Airport, where other flights had to be temporarily halted.
RCMP in Richmond, B.C., say in a statement that a report came in just after 1 p.m. Tuesday about a Cessna that "had been hijacked" and was on its way to Vancouver.
Police say the "sole occupant" of the plane was arrested after it touched down.
