Saskatchewan may ask to trigger AgriRecovery for producers affected by bovine tuberculosis.
Provincial agriculture minister Daryl Harrison said last week he had heard from cattle organizations about the need for more help.
Guthrie announces PC revival at Canada Day event
Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie took to the stage at Cochrane’s Canada Day celebration, telling thousands gathered at Mitford Park that he’s working to bring back the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Alberta.
Wearing a bright blue “PC Alberta” shirt, Guthrie’s appearance and message signaled a potential return to the province’s political roots.
The former UCP cabinet minister stepped down earlier this year, citing concerns over Premier Danielle Smith’s handling of allegations of political interference in healthcare.
North West Terminal continues to sit idle
A founding shareholder questions why the board approved raises for executives while the terminal incurred $28 million in cumulative losses since 2016
North West Terminal Ltd. is being tight-lipped about what is happening with the idled grain company.
The firm held its annual general meeting on June 18, but chief executive officer Jason Skinner refused to divulge what was discussed at the AGM.
“We’ll just go no comment because we’re in negotiations on some things,” he said.
Mann brothers settle differences
Two brothers embroiled in an eight-year-long bitter legal battle over control of a generic crop input business have “buried the hatchet.”
Jim and Jason Mann have agreed to end litigation against one another and the businesses they run, which are Farmers of North America (FNA) and AgraCity Crop & Nutrition Ltd.
“The news of the day is the Mann vs. Mann is ending and Jim and I are burying the hatchet,” said Jason.
New fence to protect Jumping Pound Creek’s shoreline
A new permanent fence will be installed this month along Jumping Pound Creek in Cochrane’s Bow Meadows area, as part of efforts to protect the local environment.
The Parks and Open Spaces team is replacing the existing temporary fence with a more durable post-and-rail design along the east berm of the creek. The goal is to safeguard the sensitive riparian zone, a vital area that supports vegetation essential for maintaining the berm’s stability.
Cochrane boy advances in Junior Ranger race but still needs votes
Ten-year-old Cochrane nature lover Nathan Epp has taken a big step toward becoming the 2025 Ranger Rick Jr. Ranger, finishing first out of 83 kids in his group during the latest round of the national competition.
Nathan is now one of 10 kids advancing to the quarterfinals, and the support of the community continues to play a huge role in his success.
His mother, Angela Epp, says they’re not exactly sure how many finalists will move on from this phase, but they know that every vote counts.
“We need to get him up there to progress,” she said.

Cochrane packs the park for Canada Day party
Cochrane’s Canada Day bash lit up Mitford Park with sunshine, big crowds, and a strong sense of Canadian pride.
Organizers Marina Chabbert and Erika Richards with the Cochrane and Area Event Society say they couldn’t have asked for a better day. “It’s amazing the weather cooperated this year,” said Chabbert. “Loads of people, everything went off without a hitch, it’s just amazing.”
The day was filled with fun for all ages, from dancing and games to face painting and family-friendly activities. Richards says watching the park fill up with families is always a highlight.
Applications open to join Cochrane Library Board
Cochrane is looking for new voices to help shape the future the Cochrane Public Library.
The Town is recruiting two residents to join the Cochrane Library Board as public-at-large members.
Board members help chart the library’s direction, manage financial priorities and support programs and partnerships that reflect the needs of the community.
“Serving on the Cochrane Library Board is an opportunity to have a direct impact on one of our educational, cultural and community anchors,” said Stacey Loe, Executive Director of Corporate Services.
