Pioneer Days draws thousands for Mennonite anniversary celebration

Pioneer Days was a booming success this weekend with over 4,500 visitors over three days at Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach.  

They had nearly 1,800 people on both Saturday and Monday, and nearly 1,000 people came out on Sunday.  

Robert Goertzen, Interim Executive Director and Program Manager at MHV, says they had great crowds.  

RM of Piney hosting educational forest walks starting today

The RM of Piney is hosting three forest walks from now to September, with their first one taking place this Saturday, June 8.  

Bob Austman will be leading the walks. He has a background in forestry, owns property in the RM, and loves forest education.  

“I love to spread knowledge about our beautiful Manitoba forest resources.”  

RM of Piney calls for community action in wildfire preparedness

The Rural Municipality of Piney is asking residents to get involved in planning events around wildfire community preparedness.  

From May to October, the RM is encouraging residents to host events and work on projects that raise awareness of wildfire risks and become better prepared for wildfire.

Chief Administrative Officer for the RM of Piney, Martin Van Osch, says wildfire is a significant risk for the RM of Piney.

Steinbach home of Miriam Toews to be recognized after quick fundraising campaign

A plaque will be erected to celebrate author Miriam Toews, originally from Steinbach, thanks to funds donated by the community. 

Andrew Unger, who set up the GoFundMe, is looking forward to celebrating the award-winning and best-selling author. 

“Not only is she a well-known writer internationally, but she also has written specifically about Steinbach and the house that we're putting the plaque in front of, so it's very exciting.” 

Nugget, the blind pug, found and returned to family after 16 days

Marnie Lee Mackintosh and her nine-year-old pug have been reunited after 16 days of Nugget being lost. 

Mackintosh says Nugget has become almost completely blind over the last year and can only see about a hands-length in front of her. 

Nugget went missing from the family's home in Kleefeld on Easter Sunday.

Steinbach’s Michelle Sawatzky was awarded the University of Manitoba's Assistant Coach of the Year. 

Sawatzky says she was completely shocked when she heard her name announced. 

“There are some awards as an athlete that you can anticipate, if you're on a #1 ranked team and you're a good player, you might be in line for something.”

Classic 107's own Michelle Sawatzky has been named the University of Manitoba's Assistant Coach of the Year. 

Sawatzky says she was completely shocked when she heard her name announced. 

“There are some awards as an athlete that you can anticipate, if you're on a No. 1 ranked team and you're a good player, you might be in line for something.” 

She says that UM has so many teams with incredible people guiding the athletes. 

RCMP investigating break and enter at Vita Canada Post

A break and enter at the Vita Canada Post building was reported to RCMP this past Monday morning (April 8th) at 7:50 am.

It appears the break and enter occurred sometime during the night prior.

The front door is unlocked for the general public to access mail, and in this instance, the suspect entered through the unlocked door and damaged the office door, stealing various office items. It does not appear any mail was stolen.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Stuartburn council and residents pleased with Highway 201 drain project plan

The RM of Stuartburn recently had Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) come to council and present Phase 3 of the Highway 201 Drain project. 

Reeve, Michelle Gawronsky, sums up the project. 

“They're trying to figure out which way they can make sure the water is flowing to the Roseau River in the most productive way that has the least impact on the residents in the area.”
