RCMP investigating break and enter at Vita Canada Post

A break and enter at the Vita Canada Post building was reported to RCMP this past Monday morning (April 8th) at 7:50 am.

It appears the break and enter occurred sometime during the night prior.

The front door is unlocked for the general public to access mail, and in this instance, the suspect entered through the unlocked door and damaged the office door, stealing various office items. It does not appear any mail was stolen.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Stuartburn council and residents pleased with Highway 201 drain project plan

The RM of Stuartburn recently had Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) come to council and present Phase 3 of the Highway 201 Drain project. 

Reeve, Michelle Gawronsky, sums up the project. 

“They're trying to figure out which way they can make sure the water is flowing to the Roseau River in the most productive way that has the least impact on the residents in the area.” 

Prescribed Burn Association launching in the RM of Stuartburn

There is now an official Prescribed Burn Association in the RM of Stuartburn. 

The steering committee of the Stuartburn Prescribed Burn Association came out to present to council and the public on Thursday, March 21. 

Reeve of Stuartburn, Michelle Gawronsky, says this will ensure they have prescribed burns done. 

Local doctor says it takes time to recover losing an hour this weekend

This weekend marks the shift into Daylight Saving time as the clocks move ahead one hour at 2:00 am Sunday.

While we may gain an extra hour of daylight, the transition can still impact our bodies negatively. Dr. Denis Fortier from Southern Health underscores the effects of sudden time changes on our well-being.

“The change in daylight saving time, both in the spring and in the fall, can have some detrimental effects on you and your health,” says Dr. Fortier. The negative impacts are particularly pronounced in the spring when we "spring forward."

MHV artifact case tells the story of a Russlander family

The Mennonite Heritage Village has an artifact case on display in the Russlander exhibit that tells the story of the Abrahams family. 

Andrea Klassen, Senior Curator at MHV shares the story that gives an inside look on what that experience was like for so many.  

The story starts with Peter and Anna Abrahams, a couple who leave their home in Crimea in 1929, hoping to be allowed to leave the Soviet Union for Canada. 

South East Sno-Riders make progress on trail maintenance

With snow on the ground, the South East Sno-Riders are looking forward to another season on the trails. 

They had their first board meeting in September and since then, people have started working on trails and doing a variety of jobs. 

President of the South East Sno-Riders, Mitch Gobeil says there's been ongoing work all summer long. 

Woodridge ATV Sandhogs close down trails for the season

The Woodridge ATV Sandhogs have officially closed down the trail for the season. 

The trail is still open to ride, but the club will not be maintaining or checking on the trail until spring, so ride at your own risk. 

Gary Hora, President of the Woodridge ATV Sandhogs as well as the President of ATV Manitoba says the season went really well.  

Konrad Narth elected MLA for La Verendrye

Konrad Narth has been elected as MLA for La Verendrye and is going into his first term as an MLA.

The PC candidate for La Verendrye was elected Tuesday with 4,831 votes. 

This was a huge lead over the runner-up, Bianca Siem of the NDP at 1,596 votes. 

Narth was happy to see all the support that came through.

“Me as a new candidate, obviously very thankful for the people that brought me here today. It's been a year-long journey from the nomination to where we are now as me being a new MLA.”
