20 room assisted living housing in Sprague seeing progress

The Timberline Community Housing Project is one step closer to its vision for a 20-room assisted living housing community in Sprague. 

The facility will cater to seniors who can no longer live independently, or choose not to, but prefer an alternative to a personal care home. It is expected to open in 2025. 

Hockey player from Niverville excited to play pro league in Sweden

Hayden Fast, a hockey player from Niverville, is about to start a new hockey season in Sweden. 

After coming off a decent season with the St. Vital Victorias, he was debating whether he should call it quits on hockey and go to school.

Fast says his plans changed when he got the opportunity to go overseas. 

“I figured this was my only chance, and I might as well seize the moment. So I ended up playing for their Division 2 Pro Team.” 

He got the opportunity through his agent, who told him there was a team looking for Canadian imports for their next season. 

Vita Food Bank committee hard at work, still needing charitable tax status

The new food bank coming to Vita now has a formal committee.

Michelle Gawronsky, Reeve for the RM of Stuartburn, says they are currently looking at partnering up with different organizations.

“Such as HyLife, Maple Leaf, any of the big industries that work through or within our community to be able to help out the Food Bank is a definite need.” 

STARS responds to two vehicle collision at the corner of Hwy 75 and Hwy 210

On Tuesday afternoon there was a two-vehicle collision near St. Adolphe at the corner of Highway 75 and Highway 210. 

The Ritchot Fire Department responded to the collision along with STARS Air Ambulance.

STARS transported a male patient in his 50s in stable condition from the St. Adolphe scene to HSC in Winnipeg. 

Funnel clouds spotted in southeast during severe storms Thursday afternoon

Funnel clouds were spotted in Kleefeld, southwest of Steinbach, Thursday afternoon.

Tornado warnings were issued by Environment Canada for several municipalities in the area including Hanover, La Broquerie and Stuartburn.

Steinbach was also hit with a mid-day thunderstorm on Thursday.

The rain temporarily flooded some streets. There was also a power outage felt in parts of the city.

Steinbach's Summer In The City is almost here... what is new this year?

Steinbach's summer street festival has added a few improvements this year. 

Carla Campbell with Summer In The City is excited about more seating at the Cultures Stage.

“We're actually working with our Cultures Stage layout to be able to open up that space a little bit better so that we can get more people around the stage and seated more comfortably because that is always a very popular area of our festival.” 

Curator shares the story behind the 400 pound, 15.5 foot sturgeon caught in Manitoba

In October of 1903, Sandy Waddell caught a 15.5 foot long sturgeon that weighed 406 pounds. 

June Hormann with the Franklin Museum in Dominion City shares that Sandy Waddell’s son, James Waddell, wrote about the event afterward.

Excellence in Nursing Education Award given to a Southern Health nurse

Nancy Lester is the Regional Obstetrical Education Facilitator for Southern Health-Sante Sud, and she recently won The Excellence in Nursing Education Award. 

The award is presented to a nurse who practices as a Nurse Educator in a clinical setting that encourages critical thinking and innovation in nursing practice.   

The Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba held its Annual General Meeting on May 11, where Lester won one of the 25 Professional Nursing Awards that were given out.
