Health officials say this year's flu likely to impact mostly children

Southern Health is launching its flu shot clinics this week.

The first clinic of the season happens on Wednesday in St. Jean. The last clinic takes place on November 28th in Winkler. 

Dr. Davinder Singh is Medical Officer of Health for the region. He says you do not need to wait for a clinic to get your flu shot, noting both the flu shot and the COVID-19 updated vaccine should already be widely available at medical clinics or pharmacies. Dr. Singh says public health clinics are also stocking the pneumococcal pneumonia shot for those who are eligible.

Judge to make decision in 2021 New Bothwell murder

A judge is expected to decide whether a Winnipeg man should be deemed not criminally responsible for his role in the killings of his parents and stabbing a colleague. One of the killings happened in New Bothwell.
 
Manitoba Court of King's Bench Justice Kenneth Champagne heard on Monday that Trevor Farley was experiencing psychosis and auditory delusions the day he stabbed his 73-year-old parents to death and stabbed a nursing supervisor more than a dozen times nearly two years ago.

Green Party leader finds positives in election loss

The Leader of the Green Party of Manitoba says last week Tuesday was still a positive day, even though the party failed to make history in our province. 

No Green Party candidate has ever won a seat in the Manitoba Legislature. That streak continued in the latest general election.

Janine Gibson, who lives south of Steinbach, ran in Wolseley this time around. Gibson finished fourth in the voting, after collecting 544 votes, or 6.29 per cent. NDP candidate Lisa Naylor claimed 6,483 votes, or nearly 75 per cent of all votes. 

Cooler weather looms following one of warmest Septembers on record

Our stretch of unseasonably warm weather is about to change in southern Manitoba. That is according to Sara Hoffman with Environment Canada. 

The normal high for this time of year is 15 degrees Celsius.

"We have a cold front actually swinging through the province today, that's causing some of those thunderstorms," explains Hoffman. "That should usher in some more seasonal temperatures."

In fact, the forecast high for Wednesday is 17 degrees and for Thursday is 13 degrees.

RCMP seize more property stolen from across southern Manitoba

RCMP have made an arrest following the discovery of stolen property from locations across southern Manitoba. 

On Friday, as a result of an ongoing investigation, officers with the Manitoba East District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) unit, along with assistance from the Gimli RCMP Detachment, RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS), executed a search warrant at a property located in the Rural Municipality of Gimli.

More than 100,000 ballots cast already, with advance polls closing Saturday

Manitoba voters have Friday and Saturday left o cast their early ballots in the provincial election. 

Advance voting opened last week Saturday and will run until the end of the day this coming Saturday. According to Elections Manitoba, there were approximately 107,149 ballots cast through the first four days (September 23rd through 26th). 

Manitobans can vote at any advance polling place in the province. 

Manitoba gears up for start of flu shots in October

Manitoba's top doctor says COVID-19 and influenza are circulating at low levels right now in our province.
    
Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin says we can expect increased circulation of respiratory viruses as the season moves on. He notes Manitobans can take important steps to help protect themselves, their families and their community. This should include good handwashing, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve and staying home when sick.
