Warmer than normal fall expected for southern Manitoba

On the heels of a summer that was warmer than normal for southern Manitoba, the Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada says that same trend will continue this fall. In fact, even though we are now into meteorological fall, David Phillips says there are summer-like temperatures in the forecast into next week. 

The normal high for this time of year is 22 degrees. 

"I'm just shaking my head when I see the temperatures," notes Phillips. "These are temperatures that could be a dozen or more degrees warmer than normal."

The Old Farmer's Almanac calls for sneaky cold winter, but no snow until November

With temperatures this week in the 30's for southern Manitoba, it may be hard to think about winter and snow. However, The Old Farmer's Almanac has just released its Canadian edition, which includes our forecast for the upcoming winter.

"I don't know how to break this to you," says Managing Editor Jack Burnett. "But we're saying that it's a chilly prediction."

Manitoba Government investing $1.1M in provincial park projects

The Manitoba government announced Friday an investment worth more than $1 million in its provincial parks.

Environment Climate and Parks Minister Jeff Wharton says the $1.1 million from the Provincial Parks Endowment Fund will support park enhancement projects. This year's funding will support 64 projects. 

Ritchot Mayor explains why sinkhole has not yet been repaired

If you have driven down Twin Creek Road north of St. Adolphe in recent months, there is a chance you have seen the large sinkhole.

Ritchot Mayor Chris Ewen says the hole has been there since the spring flood and confirms that yes, the municipality is well aware that it is there. And, though it falls within the Rural Municipality of Ritchot, Ewen says there is an explanation for why repairs have not yet been made.

Municipal officials react to Highway 75 rebuild announcement

Municipal politicians are applauding the provincial government for Wednesday's announcement concerning Highway 75.

Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk has promised that the southbound lanes of Highway 75 from Ste. Agathe to Morris will be rebuilt next year at a cost of more than $61 million. Work will include 27.7 kilometres of surface reconstruction, as well as shoulder, drainage and intersection improvements. The surface will be reconstructed using concrete pavement.

Watershed district wraps up decade-long study on Roseau River

A spokesperson for Seine Rat Roseau Watershed District is calling it gratifying, after a decade-long investment of time. 

Interim Manager Joey Pankiw is referring to the completion of their Roseau River Integrated Watershed Management Plan. According to Pankiw, this plan outlines actions to address land and water priorities for the Manitoba portion of the Roseau River Watershed. 

SCU and MPI reporting fraudulent calls and texts

Both Steinbach Credit Union (SCU) and Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) would like to inform the public about separate frauds circulating in our province.

According to SCU, members are reporting receiving fraudulent calls claiming to be from SCU, or in some cases, Microsoft on behalf of SCU. The scammer informs the member that there has been fraudulent transaction activity on their account and in order to fix the transaction, they need to come into a branch and withdraw large sums of cash and deposit the funds into a Bitcoin ATM.
