Sports Update - Friday, April 7th
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven semifinals begin tonight in Steinbach and Portage. The Pistons face the Swan Valley Stampeders at the T.G. Smith Centre and the Terriers meet the Virden Oil Capitals at Stride Place. Steinbach defeated the Winkler Flyers 4-2 Tuesday night in the seventh and deciding game of their opening round series. The Stampeders eliminated the defending Turnbull Cup champion Dauphin Kings four games to two; the Oil Capitals knocked off the OCN Blizzard in six games and Portage eliminated the Niverville Nighthawks four games to one.
Sports Update - Thursday, April 6th
The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames are tied for the second wildcard in the NHL’s Western Conference with 89 points each. Jacob Markstrom made 34 saves including 15 in the third period as the Flames downed the Jets 3-1 at Canada Life Centre. Kyle Connor with his 31st of the season on the power play in the first period had the lone goal for Winnipeg. The Jets, who host Nashville on Saturday, have four games left. Calgary has three.
Sports Update - Friday, November 4th
Michelle Sawatzky-Koop who was the starting setter for the University of Manitoba from 1988-93 and led the Bisons to three CIAU national titles and was the CIAU Player of the Year in both 1991 and 1992. On the international stage she helped Canada qualify for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where they finished ninth and she was the only setter in Canadian women’s volleyball history to win three sets and a match (over Peru) at an Olympic Games. Halldor Bjarnason was a trailblazer for people with disabilities to participate and excel in sport.
