Humboldt and Melfort area charitable organizations received over $41,000 in funding courtesy of gaming grants provided by Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS) as part of its third-quarter fiscal year disbursement.  

Punnichy RCMP responded to a fatal single vehicle rollover near the community of Lestock. 

At approximately 2:50 a.m., Punnichy RCMP received a report of a single vehicle rollover on Highway #15, approximately seven kilometres west of Lestock, SK. Officers immediately responded.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as a 17-year-old from Foam Lake, SK. His family has been notified.

Punnichy RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Following the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation extension of rotating strikes, the organization representing Saskatchewan teachers says it’s giving notice of a withdrawal of noon hour supervision services on Thursday, February 8.  

The Farmers' Bonspiel at the Wadena ReMax Curling Club came to a close in style with the A Final tied coming home.  

Jay Bindig made a spectacular skinny in off to stick and lie one buried, leaving no path for Brent Franko to draw. That led to a steal and the win for the Bindig foursome.  

This year's event saw one game with one team's average age in the high 80’s, including 2 90-year-olds, playing the junior high mixed team, averaging 12 years old. It proves curling is truly a sport for everyone.

With Valentines Day coming up, it was the perfect opportunity to share the charm of a handmade heart, along with the puzzlement that "matters of the heart” can sometimes bring. 

Crafter Ed Drachenberg was on hand at the Humboldt and District Gallery to guide his apprentices through the process of making a heart shaped wire puzzle. The puzzles are fashioned with cutters, pliers, a little solder and a little know-how.  

The chili was warm, as was the hospitality, at the Humboldt and District SPCA Chili Sale on Friday, February 2 hosted by The Elizabeth. A crowd gathered throughout the sale to visit and warm up with a bowl of chili and baked on deep fried bannock and a beverage.  

The chili sale was the latest fundraiser gathering dollars to support the day-to-day operations of the SPCA. Donations are greatly appreciated, as is the public’s attendance at fundraising efforts like the chili sale.  

Prairieland Park was the site of a knockdown, drag out competition on Thursday, February 1 to proclaim the King of Kovbasa. This year, a local contender in the Ukrainian sausage showdown returned in the guise of Calvin Lukan from Modern Meats in Humboldt.  

The SaskTel Tankard is underway at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon. The event rolls through the weekend to the final on Sunday.  

The event winner is off to the Montana’s Brier in Regina from March 1-10 clad in Saskatchewan's green jackets. 

Top players from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Manitoba Junior Hockey league are on the ice in Winnipeg January 30-and 31 for the MJHL-SJHL Showcase. It’s a chance for scouts to clap their eyeballs on the cream of the two leagues’ crop for the 2023-24 Year.  

The Humboldt and District SPCA is preparing to host a chili and Bannock fundraiser on Friday, February 2nd. 

The fundraiser will take place from 4 - 7 pm at the Elizabeth. 

A bowl of chili with Bannock or a bun and a drink will cost $8 with refills of the chili costing $5. 

All proceeds from this event will go back to the SPCA to help support their efforts.
