Jaskirat Singh Sidhu applies for return of permanent resident status

Following a deportation order issued to Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the trucker found responsible for the devastation in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash has applied to have his permanent residence status returned.  In May, that status was revoked along with the deportation order.  

Sentenced to 8 years in prison at a court proceeding in Melfort, Sidhu was sentenced to 8 years in prison but was granted full parole last year.  

Funding boost announced for province's regional parks

There are more than 90 regional parks across the province. Each park is unique, and offers different amenities, that can include camping, swimming, boating, fishing, sports grounds and golf courses. All regional parks were developed by volunteers, and they are getting a funding boost from the provincial government.  

Crops playing catchup with warm weather in Sask Ag's crop report

Despite occasional patchy rainfall and small cell thunderstorms that have dropped intense downpours in isolated areas in east central Saskatchewan, conditions have been drier in the opening week of July.  

Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report shows some crop yellowing in low lying areas and those spots impacted by isolated rainfall events. With the heat, sunshine and humidity in play, many crops are reported to be in overall good condition.  

Provincial Fire Ban in effect

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) issued a provincial fire ban taking effect at noon (12:00 pm) on Thursday, July 11.  

Crown lands and provincial parks, provincial recreation sites and the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District are affected. 

Open fires, controlled burns and fireworks, also includes all land within 4.5 km of the provincial forest boundary. 

Record-breaking weekend for Hammerheads Aidra Angelstad and Watrous Kellie Campbell

This past weekend, Humboldt Hammerheads swimmer Aidra Angelstad established new standards. 

Angelstad set three new provincial records at the Melfort Marlins Swim Meet in Nipawin.  

On Saturday, she broke the record in the girls 15-17 50m backstroke, previously set in 2004. Then she broke her own, newly set, record again the next day. 

Know your limit, stay within it: Conservation Officer compliance checks result in 15 fines

Saskatchewan Conservation Officers kept busy for two of the weekends this spring, May 18th and 19th, and May 25th and 26th, conducting fisheries compliance checks on anglers at the Regina Beach pier on Last Mountain Lake. 

In all, 168 anglers were given compliance checks, with a variety of violations uncovered, including those being over the limit on walleye and upper-sized walleye, using more than one line in open waters, and being more than 25 meters from a fishing line.

As a result of the inspections, officers issued 15 charges and seized 35 walleye. 

RCMP search for break and enter suspect near Pleasantdale

On the evening of July 6, 2024, Melfort RCMP received a report of a break and enter in progress at a rural property in the RM of Pleasantdale.

Police responded to the scene but the suspect(s) had already left the area before police arrived. A female suspect was captured on video surveillance and police are requesting the public's assistance in identifying her. 

*Update* Saskatoon RCMP investigating after explosive devices found in rural mailboxes

 

The Saskatoon RCMP received a report on Sunday, July 7 that several mailboxes near Sunset Estates in the RM of Blucher were broken into 

and suspicious objects left in them. An investigation determined one of the mailboxes was damaged by an explosive device. 

This morning, just before 10:00 am, Saskatoon RCMP received a separate report of an explosive device placed in a mailbox rural road 3040 in the RM of Corman Park. 

Woman hospitalized after single vehicle collision near intersection of HWY #5 & HWY #41

A 23-year old woman has been hospitalized following a single vehicle collision near Saskatoon on Sunday morning.

At around 6:15 am, on July 7, 2024, police responded to the call of a vehicle accident with injuries near the intersection of Highway #5 and Highway #41. 

Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle in a ditch, that is believed to have rolled numerous times. The vehicle had also started on fire. Saskatoon Fire was on the scene to extinguish the fire and assist in extracting the driver from the vehicle.
