The week started off for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings with a trade announcement, some good news when it comes to the SJHL's players of the week, and then a game against the Flin Flon Bombers to open up the SJHL Showcase in Warman.

The trade announcement was that 03-born defenseman Nolan Henderson had been moved to the Melfort Mustangs. In exchange for Henderson, the Red Wings got back a player development fee and a second-round pick in the 2024 draft.

The good news from the league was that forward Jerome Maharaj was named the SJHL's MVP of the Week. In three games last week, one against Kindersley and two against the Battlefords, Maharaj had three goals and two assists.

Then came the game Monday afternoon at the showcase. It was the second meeting of the season between the Wings and Bombers, with the first one ending in a 2-1 win for the Bombers in a shootout at Crescent Point Place. This time, the Bombers would get the win, but it would be a completely different score.

The Red Wings would be limited to just 11 shots over the second and third periods, while Flin Flon managed to get the puck past Dazza Mitchell eight times, as the Bombers skated to an 8-1 victory.

Weyburn did score the first goal of the game, 6:38 into the first period, before the Bombers took over. Cade Meiklejohn scored his first of the season, assisted by Maharaj. Maharaj, however, would not finish the game. With 5:06 to play in the opening period, he would be assessed a two-minute minor for checking from behind. The penalty carries an automatic game misconduct as well.

The Bombers would score on the ensuing power play, and things went downhill for the Red Wings from there. Flin Flon would fire 39 shots on goal over the last two periods of the game, and in addition to putting up an 8-1 score, also outshot Weyburn 47-19.

Weyburn will now get a few days off before they play the Battlefords North Stars on Thursday afternoon in the final game of the Showcase. It will also be the third meeting in six days between the two clubs, as they played this past Friday and Saturday.
