The Oakland Recreation Club is ready to hit the ice with another hockey season for the youth in their community.
Hockey registration for this coming season will occur at the rink next Monday, December 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
President of the club, Ryan Kontzie, says he is very excited to be a part of another season.
"Last year was a very good season with lots of kids. The rink was busy. It's always nice to see all the kids out on the ice, and there are quite a few other rinks within the area that have started up rec leagues again. It'll be nice to get some games in against them, and it'll be great to travel around and have these kids play some games."
Kontzie notes that they are looking for youth aged 6 to 15.
"We have Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for hockey, and public skating on Fridays and Saturdays," he continues. "We get a lot of young kids, and we teach a lot of skating as well as hockey. So, you get them going, and then, lo and behold, they get good enough, and they seem to wander off into that Portage League to step it up a notch or two. It's great to see the kids excel."
Anyone who cannot make the sign-up date but still wants to sign up their child can contact Kontzie at (204)-871-0990.
"We're just trying to get a handle on our numbers this year. Last year, we had quite a few kids. We just want to make sure we have enough coaches and ice times and just have everything organized for the kids the first week in January when we get going."
With the natural ice surface in Oakland, Kontzie says the rink schedule depends on Mother Nature.
"We try to have it ready for the first week of school in January and go until spring break."
