Precision MMA in Morden is bringing the benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) to the Pembina Valley, by exuding a passion for the discipline while instilling a sense of belonging and respect.
"I started training at BST in Winnipeg in 2017," explained owner and head coach George Sawatzky. "Prior to that, I had been studying martial arts since 1998, including Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, along with self defense courses. For as long as I can remember I have had a deep love for BJJ that has driven me to learn, grow as an athlete, coach and person."
Ever since he was a kid, Sawatzky wanted to have his own martial arts school.
"When I was a little kid, I was obsessed with martial arts movies, especially the scenes where it involved training," he shared. "I was intrigued with the discipline and mental fortitude it took to become a well rounded martial artist."
Precision MMA currently offers Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes for ages 5 and up, as well as self defense courses. They are also looking at bringing in a boxing/kick boxing coach.
"I believe, when you are going to do something, it has to be done correctly," said Sawatzky when asked about the name 'Precision'. "I also enjoy shooting and finished carpentry, and both require precision. Because of my view of martial arts, I thought it would be a perfect name for my club."
Sawatzky's coaching philosophy comes from a fundamentals context, helping each student to develop their own unique techniques according to their abilities.
"Anyone and everyone, especially people who have a fear of new things," said Sawatzky regarding who should consider giving BJJ a try at Precision MMA. "People who are being bullied, people with low self esteem, those who want to get in shape and people who want to be part of a family. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. It's so satisfying, after a class, to know you were able to do the things you never thought were possible."
Precision MMA is located at 451 Jefferson Street in Morden. You can learn more on its website, Facebook or Instagram page or by giving them a call at 431-775-1135.
"We often think we're the only ones dealing with heartache and disappointment, and no one understands what we're going through, and for a lot of us, we feel like we don't belong anywhere and we have no identity," said Sawatzky. "Precision MMA is a place free of criticism, judgment, and overall is just a safe place for people to come, and feel like they belong and are part of a family."
