PJ’s Plantation – Growing thanks to the community

It’s an exciting time at PJ’s Plantation.

This year marks the 25th season they’ve been in business as a garden centre. They like to say they’ve been “growing for you” because it’s true.

Owners Jody and Peter never thought their little business would become so big.

“We just wanted to move to the country and raise our young family. I’m a horticulturist and wanted to be in the greenhouse business," Jody explained. "I thought I’d start small with a few bedding plants."

What happened next shows how much the community embraced what PJ’s Plantation had to offer.

Partner Profile: Marshland Feeds: Gull Lake’s trusted one-stop shop for livestock and community

In the heart of Gull Lake, Marshland Feeds is rapidly becoming more than just a feed store—it’s the community’s trusted one-stop shop for livestock needs, building relationships and redefining what it means to be a local ag business.

Founded by owner Ryan Marsh just over a year ago, Marshland Feeds was born out of a simple yet powerful need: a complete, reliable feed store serving the area’s hardworking ranchers. “It’s important for ranchers to have a trusted business they can support their livelihood with,” says Cedar Hayne. “And Ryan made that possible with Marshland Feeds.”

Together, we are stronger than kidney disease

Kidney disease is life-changing, says Donna Hunter. Her father lived with kidney disease for seven years, going for dialysis three times every week.

“Having a transplant wasn’t an option for him. Dialysis gave us seven more years with him – what a gift. And this is just one of many, many stories of how kidney disease affects families.”

One in ten Manitobans are affected by kidney disease, with many not realizing it until they’re in the later stages. Right now, over 1,500 Manitobans are on dialysis.

18 years sure goes by Kkwik!

They’re nearly two decades in, and they’re still rolling out humming engines and happy customers!

Celebrating 18 years in business, owner and operators Kim and Kris Wikdahl, the husband and wife team of Kkwik Automotive, say that the clientele is what keeps the company passionate and motivated to continue doing business.

“We have amazing customers, and it’s an honour dealing with the great people that we interact with every day.”

Partner Profile: Revelation offers hope to those with chronic illness

“The conventional medicine system offers a lot of amazing things. One of the things it doesn't offer is a lot of time for chronically sick patients.”

Shelley Wilson would know – she’s a nurse practitioner who’s also trained in functional medicine. During her time with the Cypress Health Region, she became interested in integrative and holistic medicine for a deeply personal reason.

Local entrepreneur ‘steels’ the show

“When you see a piece that you can tell works really well, it functions well, it does what it’s supposed to do, and it looks really good, you ask who made it. That’s how a lot of people have found out about us,” says Taylor. “It’s good word-of-mouth. It’s building a solid reputation.”

This from Clint Taylor, owner of Portage Iron. Born and raised in Portage la Prairie, Taylor has a great deal of experience in the metal working industry, as well as building companies. So opening Portage Iron in January of 2024 felt like a natural step.

Moose Jaw Class 1 training program prioritizes scheduling flexibility and road safety

They have a saying at High Test Enterprises: “Wanna get paid to stare out the window all day?”

Given that High Test is a Class 1 training centre, the phrase is a playful one. It speaks to careers in trucking that many drivers aspire to. But it’s especially meaningful to Reade Lalonde, who coined it.

“I have ADHD, so when I was in school I used to stare outside,” he says. “I hated being in school, and they used to say that I’d never get anywhere staring out the window.”

It all started when the next generation expressed a desire to be more involved on the family ranch.

“When we took over the ranch in 2007, it was just my wife Lisa and me,” recalls Edward Watson. “It was enough to keep us going. But in 2016 our oldest daughter decided she'd like to have more involvement, so we tried to find a way to get more out of the land we already had.”

Sun to Soil Regenerative Agriculture was born.
