For the past two days, members of Golden West Weyburn have been at Great Plains Ford hosting their annual Food-raiser Blow Away Hunger.

The event kicked off on Wednesday with one goal in mind; fill the back of the Great Plains Ford Blow Away Hunger truck. The Golden West crew asked members of the community to come down and put a food donation into the truck to help support the Salvation Army over the holiday season.

“The response was incredible,” said Program Director for Golden West Weyburn Dara Currie. “We saw so many people come through those doors, bring a donation and now we get to send all this food back to the Salvation Army. It’s truly amazing.”

Currie noted that events like Blow Away Hunger are community events and cannot happen without the support of Weyburnites.

“It literally comes down to community donations,” she said. “We are here, we are organizing and taking donations and encouraging you to come down. But it’s only a success when the community comes together to show their support like they have over the past two days.”

She also noted a few local businesses that showed their support this year.

“Obviously, a huge thank you to Great Plains Ford,” she said. “The team here is incredible. They host us for two days every year, they provide a truck to fill up and then they even kick off the donations. Their support has been unwavering over the years, and we are incredibly thankful to them. As well, a huge shout out to Kater Services. For the second year in a row they made a huge donation to the cause, $5,000, and we are so thankful for their support.”

At the end of the two days, the back of the Blow Away Hunger truck was packed with non-perishable food items, and $6,500 was raised.

“It’s an amazing amount,” noted Currie. “Again, just a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped out and donated.”

Everyone who donated was also entered to win a brand-new snowblower from Canadian Tire. You can watch the draw and hear from our winner below.
