A star volleyball player, coach, role model, and inspiration – Lukas Klassen is December’s Providence University Athlete of the Month.

Having played hockey, volleyball, and track and field at a provincial and national level – including bringing home first place in the Provincial Track and Field Discus Throw – Lukas is no stranger to the athletic world.

Right now, the Steinbach Christian School Grade 12 student plays middle blocker for the 18U Providence Boys’ Junior Pilots, boasting an impressive 35-inch vertical. But, when it comes to the game, the most important part for Lukas is the time spent with his teammates.

“I’ve met a lot of great people and built incredible friendships over the years,” he says. “My teammates are great, and our constant communication keeps me at my best. The chemistry and focus between players needs to happen to play the game well.”

His strong intuition and dedication to the game are also what makes him an admirable coach.

“I coached for a week at Providence Volleyball Camp this summer, leading Bible studies and games for grade 7s and 8s. I’ve also been coaching the Grade 8 Boys’ Volleyball at SCS, and was lucky to be able to coach my brother’s team last year.”

While he’s proud to share his skills and expertise, the most rewarding part of coaching for Lukas is watching the players grow and succeed.

“It’s great watching them progress from the beginning of the year, watching them have fun, learn to work as a team, and get better together. Both of my SCS teams won their zone banners – it’s very good.”

But most of all, he’s proud of what he’s able to give back to his community as a coach.

“I feel like I have a good influence on the younger kids I’m coaching, because I remember what it’s like to play at that age and level. I remember the environment, and how it feels to being new to the game. I’m glad I’m around to help them through new challenges and help them get better.”

With his positive attitude and incredible game ethic, there’s no doubt that Lukas will make many more outstanding achievements.

Congratulations, Lukas!
