Canary Seed growers will have an opportunity to get an update on what's happening in the industry on Thursday.
The Canary Seed Development Commission of Saskatchewan is holding its annual general meeting in Regina.
Saskatchewan is the world’s leading producer and exporter of canary seed, typically growing around 300,000 acres.
The Canary Seed AGM covers a lot of ground from breeding opportunities to fungicides, and marketing.
Executive director Kevin Hursh says Dr. Pierre Hucl a long-time wheat and canary seed breeder at the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre is easing into retirement and with that happening Dr. Adam Carter has been selected to move into the role.
Hursh says he's well known at the CDC and has been working in the role for the last couple of months.
"He was already working there and has some interesting new ideas about how we can further crops. So we're really excited to have him meet canary seed producers and make his first presentation to the Canary Seed Development Commission Annual Meeting."
Another key presentation will be from Dr. Bill May with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada focuses on getting more fungicides registered for use on canary seed.
Hursh says there's only been one product ever officially registered for canary seed and that's not a healthy situation.
"We feel there's probably newer fungicides that probably are more effective. And probably a lot of producers may be using them, but they're not technically registered. So, we have to figure out what's possible to get a minor use registration on, and and also fill in data gaps in order to get a minor use registration. "
The keynote presentation is the market outlook with Chuck Penner from LeftField Commodity Research.
Hursh says Penner follows the canary seed market much more closely than other analysts and has been providing the market outlook for many years.
Once again this year producers have the option of attending in person or through ZOOM.
