Survey finds most Canadians doubt country’s disaster readiness

A majority of Canadians don’t believe the country is adequately prepared for natural disasters, according to new polling released Thursday by the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The survey found 58 per cent of respondents said Canada has not prepared communities for disasters such as floods, wildfires and severe storms. Another 61 per cent said they aren’t confident governments are working together to prepare for future risks.

Saskatchewan communities gear up for Culture Days celebration

Communities across Saskatchewan are set to celebrate arts, culture, and heritage from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12 as part of this year’s Culture Days, Canada’s largest annual celebration of creativity.

Now in its 16th year, Culture Days offers free events highlighting the province’s diverse cultural landscape, including activities commemorating the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30. Events promoting reconciliation are registered on the Culture Days website and encourage participation from families and community members.

Biggar RCMP investigating diesel, heating fuel thefts around Spinney Hill 

A slew of crime related activity kept Biggar RCMP members busy over the past week.

Two suspect vehicles made the detachment report, first being a dark coloured large SUV accused of stealing diesel fuel from a rural property, and also 800 litres of heating fuel from a residence in Spinney Hill.

The other vehicle report involved a suspicious grey Yukon with black rims driving around the area, no further updates being given.

Ferry closures due to low water levels

The Saskatchewan Highway Hotline has issued updates on provincial ferry operations, with two ferries currently closed due to low water levels.

The Lancer and Paynton ferries are not operating, while other ferries remain open with either normal or limited load capacities. Light-load restrictions are in place at the Estuary and Lemsford ferries, allowing crossings of up to 4,000 kg and 7,500 kg respectively.
