SJFHL: Klippers, Ice Hawks hitting the ice for spring camp

A crop of Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League hopefuls will be hitting the ice this weekend in Kindersley and Outlook for spring camp. Both the Western Prairie Junior Klippers and Outlook Mainline Ice Hawks are welcoming in players born between 2004-2010.

The Klippers are hosting a two-day camp from the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley. On Saturday separate groups will take part in skills and drills from 11:00-12:30 PM, and 3:00-4:30, and then on Sunday players will be split into teams for a scrimmage from 3:00-4:30.

Sask Government cracks down on public drug use with trespass amendments

The Government of Saskatchewan has passed new regulations that give police more power to enforce trespass laws in public spaces and businesses.

The changes are aimed at addressing safety concerns linked to illicit drug use, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, and are part of the province’s broader strategy to protect communities from drug-related harms.

Under The Trespass to Property Amendment Regulations, 2025, certain behaviours, including public intoxication and drug use, are now automatically considered trespassing in places like libraries, parks and shops.

Poll results: Majority in favour of strychnine use for pest control

Strychnine use for Richardson's ground squirrels — a topic that has been up for debate since the federal government banned the substance for use in terms of pest control back in March 2024. The ban was instituted after Health Canada deemed strychnine did not meet the requirements for protection of the environment.

Graffiti, theft and rural crash among cases for Unity RCMP

Unity RCMP responded to a range of calls for service in the past week, including property crime, mental health concerns and a rural vehicle collision.

Among the incidents, police received a complaint under the Mental Health Act. Officers followed up and spoke with the individual in question. RCMP also responded to a complaint of graffiti on a street in Unity; the matter remains under investigation.

Another call involved an allegation that an individual was not complying with a probation order. Upon investigation, officers determined the complaint was unfounded.

22-year-old man charged in death of Red Pheasant First Nation woman

Following a continued investigation by the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes unit, an adult male was arrested in relation to the death of 63-year-old Pearl Benson from Red Pheasant First Nation. The arrest took place at a correctional centre in Manitoba.

22-year-old Billy Leon from Toronto, Ontario has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of failure to comply with release order conditions.

Leon is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 24.

Saskatoon man linked to Rosetown kidnapping faces more than 100 charges in GPS tracker harassment case

A Saskatoon man with a violent past — including a high-profile kidnapping conviction — is now facing more than 100 new charges as police continue to investigate a growing GPS tracker harassment case that has identified at least 23 victims.

Marty Schira, 46, appeared by phone in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Tuesday, where Crown prosecutor Christy Pannell confirmed the expanded list of charges. They include mischief, harassment, intimidation, fraudulent use of a computer system, and fraudulent concealment of a computer system.

Kindersley man convicted in Saskatoon Court faces jail time

A man who previously had his matters sent from Kindersley to Saskatoon court has been sentenced on several charges, including dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

Austin Heid was handed a 547-day jail sentence and a three-year driving prohibition after being convicted of failure to comply with a demand resulting in bodily harm, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and possession of property obtained by crime.
