It's been a long-standing tradition of the Holy Spirit School to spread Christmas joy to nearby residents.

Yesterday, the students were involved in a school-wide work bee to create about 850 cards to deliver to residents of the Fireside community.

Holy Spirit principal Kim Welte says the students take great joy in preparing the cards.

"The kids come with their buddies, and they just get such joy being together celebrating the season, and celebrating our faith," she says.

Grade 7 students Tripp, Pepper and Elora were among the 400-plus students preparing the cards. All have prepared them since attending the Holy Spirit School, dating back to when it was located in east Cochrane.

"I like how we can gather the community together by handing them out and making everyone happy with them," says Tripp.

"I like connecting with our community and shining in our faith with other people," says Pepper.

Elora says they also do it at Easter, and she enjoys preparing both of the cards.

On occasion, she has been greeted at the door by residents.

"They thank us for the cards, and it gives you a warm feeling," she says.

Principal Welte says the response from the community has been positive. Several residents send emails and, on occasion, they drop by to give thanks.

"Last year, we've had a couple drop by and personally thank the students. It's a huge heart-warming thing to see when the community comes in and says thank you."

The cards will be delivered on Monday afternoon, weather permitting.
