It's a little later than usual, but the Buffalo Creek Pond ice in Altona is ready for recreational use.

"We are very excited to announce that the pond is finally ready for skating," said Mayor Harv Schroeder. "The warming shack is up and running, and the ice is safe to go on. With the crazy weather we’ve been having, it’s been
difficult to get the ice as smooth as we strive for, but our team continues to do our best to keep it as smooth as possible."

Meanwhile, he noted the toboggan hill is a little bare, right now.

And sticking with the icy theme, and the fact there was another round of freezing drizzle earlier this week, slick streets and sidewalks are top of mind, once again, for public works in Altona. Schroeder said crews have been hard at work, doing the best they can to deal with the slippery conditions, since significant freezing rain Christmas eve.

"I urge you to remain careful on sidewalks and roads," he stressed. "As ice melts and re-freezes, slippery walking and driving conditions continue to be a hazard. Our Public Works department is doing their best to sand these surfaces as quickly as possible, but please remain cautious as you travel through town. "
