Province weighs in on Crescent Lake water and weed issues

The Province of Manitoba is responding to concerns from Portage la Prairie residents about worsening weed growth and uncertain water levels at Crescent Lake.

Thick vegetation has been building up across the lake this summer, and city officials say they’re limited in how they can manage it. At the same time, the city has had to pause its usual practice of pumping water in from the Assiniboine River, something that’s been done for decades, due to rules connected to aquatic invasive species (AIS).

It's official: Bunge and Viterra have completed their merger

The proposed merger between Bunge and Viterra was finalized on July 2nd.  

According to the company's website, the new company marks the creation of a premier global agribusiness solutions company for food, feed and fuel. 

Bunge’s Chief Executive Officer Greg Heckman called it a defining moment for the company and its global team.

Community-made butterfly mosaic to take flight in Spring Creek Park this August

A colourful new public art project is landing in Moose Jaw this summer, thanks to a collaboration between the Northwest Community Association, the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery (MJMAG), and the City of Moose Jaw.

By late August, a large-scale butterfly mosaic sculpture will be installed near the corner of Thatcher Drive and Simcoe Street, where the paved trail and playground meet in Spring Creek Park.

Rescue pets, donkey kisses, & more at SPCA's Annual Adoptathon

The SPCA Swift Current's third Annual Adoptathon is coming up in a little over a week, featuring adoptable cats and dogs, a donkey kissing booth from Cypress Advanced First-Aid Services, and more.

The adoptathon is being held in partnership with Dufresne Furniture and Appliances for the third time, taking place in the Dufresne parking lot on Sunday, July 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Kash Knight, fundraising manager for the SPCA Swift Current, shared that the exciting event will also include local artists, food vendors, a bouncy castle, and a raffle prize.

Auto theft costs soar across Alberta

According to recently released data from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), auto theft costs in Alberta have increased significantly over the last three years and continued to rise last year.

"Auto theft claims costs were $110.3 million in 2024 compared to $67.0 million in 2021, an increase of 65 per cent," shared IBC.

The hardest-hit cities are Calgary and Edmonton, where auto theft claim costs rose by 81 per cent and 79 per cent, respectively, between 2021 and 2024.

Moose Jaw leads province in year-over-year price growth, but realtors warn inventory must keep up

Moose Jaw remains one of the most competitive housing markets in Saskatchewan, according to the latest data from the Saskatchewan Realtors Association (SRA) — but the region’s real estate strength could be undermined without new inventory.
 
In its June 2025 report, the association found that Moose Jaw’s benchmark price hit $282,600, up 15.7 per cent year-over-year — the highest increase of any area tracked in the province.

He explained that while the majority of anglers he encounters stay up to date on the regulations outlined in the Saskatchewan Angler’s Guide, there are always exceptions.
