Eugenia “Jean” Viola Petersen (née Konner)
February 29, 1928 – January 14, 2024
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Jean Petersen announces her passing on January 14, 2024. She was 95 years of age. Jean was born February 29, 1928, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan to Matthew and Roselea Konner. She attended Gertrude School for Grades 1 to 10, taking some classes by correspondence, took her Grade 11 by correspondence at home, attended the Ursuline Academy in Bruno for Grade 12, and graduated from Saskatoon Normal School in 1946. She then received her Bachelor of Education in 1977. Jean married Walter Petersen in 1955 in Carmel, SK. They settled on a farm near Lake Lenore and in 1957 moved to town. They operated various businesses while Jean continued her teaching career. Jean taught at various one room rural schools and joined the staff at Lake Lenore School in 1960. Education was important to her, and she thoroughly enjoyed her 35 years of teaching. Even after she retired in 1986, she would go to the Lake Lenore School to listen to the students read. Many family members and friends were recipients of her crocheted blankets and her delicious homemade buns, fried chicken, poppy seed chiffon and snowball cakes. She was active in her community and church. Her love of music was her greatest passion. She played piano, accordion, the alpine bells and sang in many choirs. Her passion for music was shared with all her students and her greatest delight was her time spent teaching two students to play the alpine bells. Jean and Walter spent many hours enjoying travel with friends and family. Time spent at Marean Lake fishing and visiting, is among her treasured memories. In later years, she enjoyed many bus trips to casinos. A quote from Jean: “Life is full of many beautiful things and one of the best is the happiness that friendship brings. Wally and I are grateful for all the friends, both children and adults, that we have met along the way. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be part of the Lake Lenore community.” Jean moved to Humboldt in 2016 and to St. Mary’s Villa in 2018 where she resided until her passing on January 14th, 2024. She will be missed by many. Jean is lovingly remembered by numerous family members of the Konner and Petersen families.
