Teachers striking beside Thatcher Drive Jan. 16

Moose Jaw teachers were picketing in frigid temperatures on Tuesday as part of a one-day strike.

The provincewide strike was undertaken after several rounds of unsuccessful negotiations between the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) and the Government of Saskatchewan regarding a new contract.

The previous contract expired at the end of August 2023.

Kent Clegg, vice president of the Prairie South Teacher’s Association was beside Thatcher Drive in Moose Jaw. “We are really hoping that by showing the government that we are concerned and that we’re all standing together with this, that we can get them to come back to the table and be willing to listen and try to put something into place that will help all the kids.”

Further strikes or sanctions have not been announced, though a vote held in October saw 95 per cent approval from teachers to implement such measures.
