Gilbert Joseph Ludwig
February 25, 1935 – January 17, 2024
Gilbert was born on February 25th, 1935, on the family farm west of Bruno. He received his schooling in Bruno, and at the age of 18, he began working in the carpentry trade for his father. He remained living in his parent's home until August 1961, when he married his love, Audrey. Shortly after, he received his Journeyman Carpentry Certificate. His working years involved carpentry with his brother Paul for their own construction company, many years at the Canadian Forces Station near Dana, and for the Ministry of Transport at the Saskatoon Airport. After retirement, he spent his days working in his shop at home, always having several projects on the go.
Gilbert started playing accordion at the age of 17; learning to play by ear, as his parents couldn't afford music lessons. Although the accordion was his preference, he had the talent and ability to pick up any instrument and soon played without error. Over the years, he played in several bands, such as the Merrymakers, the Curly Trainor Band, the Lynn Kramer Band, The Variations, and most recently the Bruno Carmel Crew. He has played for many weddings, anniversaries, reunions, and senior homes. A highlight of his musical life was participating in the World Accordion Festival in Kimberley, BC, and taking part in an attempt to break two Guiness World Records, being successful in breaking one by playing non-stop for 32 minutes, along with 526 other accordions.
Gilbert's other loves included spending time with his family, particularly his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, traveling on family trips, and in retirement, traveling south with friends, playing cards, reading, and a special love of spending time with family and friends at the cabin he built at Wakaw Lake.
A loving, talented, hardworking man… may he rest in peace. Gilbert will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, AUDREY; his children: CATHY (Dale) and family Colin and Evan; JANET (Ray) and family Shawn (Angelica), Shawn's children Ronan and Lennon, Colby (Melissa), Amy (Kolt), children Wylie, Marshall and Levi, Jeanine, Krystal (Dave), children Kingston and Lincoln; Sister-in-law: Dolores Ludwig, brother-in-law: Brian Switzer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many special friends.
Gilbert was predeceased by his parents Emily and William Ludwig; siblings: Wilfred (Leona) Ludwig, Catherine (Frank) Thurmier, Mildred (William) Lemke, Marcella (Wilfred) Lang, Paul Ludwig, Leander Ludwig, Benedict (Lois) Ludwig, mother-in-law Margaret Elliott, sister-in-law Delores Switzer, and brother-in-law Gerald (Stella) Elliott. The Funeral Mass for Gilbert was held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Bruno Roman Catholic Church, Bruno, celebrated by Fr. Pius Schroh. A memorial luncheon followed at the Bruno & District Community Centre. Memorial donations in Gilbert’s memory may be made to Bruno Friendship Centre (Box 485, Bruno, SK, S0K 0S0) or St. Bruno Parish Cemetery Fund (Box 328, Bruno, SK, S0K 0S0).
