Sister Maureen Maier, OSU (Mary Theresa)
July 5, 1932 – January 31, 2024

Ursuline of Bruno, Sister Maureen Maier, after a long illness, passed away peacefully the morning of January 31, 2024. She was 91 years of age. Sister Maureen Maier (Mary Theresa) was born July 5, 1932, to her parents John Maier and Theresa Lermer, in Muenster, SK. She was the third of eight children: Herman (Brenda), Louise (Dick Burns), Albert (Dorothy), Isabel (Jim) Leaderhouse, Agnes (Irvine) Mendelssohn; two brothers, Alfred and Ervine, died in infancy. She attended Banner School, a local rural school, for her first 10 years of education, took Grade 11 with the Ursulines in Muenster, and Grade 12 at St. Ursula Academy in Bruno. Then she entered the Ursuline community; upon her investment she received the name Maureen. After noviciate she attended Teachers’ College in Saskatoon, graduating in 1954. This was followed by 20 years of teaching in the then-Abbacy of St. Peter’s: Lake Lenore, 1954-56; Sacred Heart Separate School, Watson, 1956-57; Cudworth, 1957-58; St. Benedict, 1958-60; Lake Lenore, 1966-67; St. Ursula Academy, 1967-74; 1975-76. In some schools Maureen served as principal as well as teacher; for a total of eight years, she was principal at St. Ursula’s Academy. As leader, Maureen was ready to offer direction and advice to her students, urging them especially to further their education. She had a good sense of humour but could also be very direct, even sharp at times. In 1976 Maureen was elected as community superior. A major event during these six years was beginning the sponsorship of refugees, the first of these being our Vietnamese family who arrived in 1979. For seven years Maureen served as director of The Merici Centre for Infant Development in Regina, then another eight years as community superior. After we moved out of our convent in Bruno, Maureen spent 3 1/2 years there in an effort to make a success of our hospitality service. In 2014, along with a number of other sisters, Maureen moved into a retirement home, Trinity Manor, in Saskatoon. May she rest in peace. Sr. Maureen leaves to mourn: her Ursuline Community; her brother Albert; her sisters Isabel and Agnes; her sisters-in-law Dorothy and Brenda; and her brother-in-law Dick Burns. She was predeceased by her parents: John and Theresa (neé Lermer) Maier; her brother Herman, her sister, Louise; and her brothers-in-law, Jim and Irvine. The Mass of Resurrection was offered at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Saskatoon, SK, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Doug Jeffrey. Others taking part were: Matthew Maier, crossbearer; Sr. Lenore Moldenhauer, responsorial psalm and gospel acclamation; Erica Maier, intentions; Gary Maier and Sr. Marie Gorsalitz, scripture readers; Vietnamese girls, giftbearers; and Dave Leaderhouse, urnbearer. Interment followed at the Ursuline Sisters Cemetery, Bruno SK.
