Marianne Jean Abbors

1941-2024

Marianne Jean Abbors (nee Connon) was born July 8, 1941 at 5:45 am in St. Boniface Hospital. That plump little dark-haired girl, weighing 5 lbs. 11 oz, peacefully left this life on March 6, 2024 in Portage General Hospital at 82 years.

Marianne spent her formative years in Winnipeg, MB.
On November 29, 1957, when Roland Anthony Abbors of Vancouver, BC gave her a ring, she stated she was floating on a cloud. On June 23, 1958 they married.
She became a military wife and mother to four children: Susan MacDonald, John Abbors (Leona), Judith Jeffries (David), and Lorraine Roberts.

Marianne and Roland were posted to Saskatoon, Centralia, Comox and finally Portage la Prairie. Our happiest childhood memories, were those of Comox, BC, where we spent quality time as a family, boating, fishing, hiking and camping.

When Marianne expressed a desire to visit her parents in 1973, Roland surprised her with a posting to Portage La Prairie, MB, where he eventually retired. They bought a small property out of town and lived there until 2001.

In her late 30’s, Marianne found the courage to get her driver’s license and in doing so, gained her freedom.

When Roland was temporarily posted to the Middle East in 1974, Marianne, for the first time in her life, worked outside the home. Woolworth’s smoke shop eventually led to her working as a nurse’s aide in capacity of a PNA 11, at the Manitoba Developmental Centre, where she retired. Marianne volunteered for several years with FSNA (National Association of Federal Retirees), assisting retired federal members.

Marianne’s hobbies included her love of Bomber games, figure skating competitions, gardening, reading, solving challenging puzzles, and caring for her pets. As a couple, she and dad enjoyed attending the symphony, bowling, camping and fishing.

Marianne is predeceased by her husband Roland, her parents Irwin and Grace Connon, her brother Robert Connon, sister Patricia Labossiere, granddaughter Kimberly Jeffries, grandson William and great-grandson Alexander. She is survived by her brother Lyle Connon and his wife Terry, her children, many grandchildren, and special friends, Jane and Joyce.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, March 15th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Rd. N, Portage la Prairie, MB. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Plains Cancer Services.
