UHRICH, Douglas Melvin
1940-2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Melvin Uhrich announce his passing on Monday, April 15, 2024, in Regina, SK, at the age of 83, after suffering from cancer for a little over a year.
Doug was predeceased by his first wife Mary, in 2005, by her parents, his sister Beverly Douglas and his parents Ethel and Ralph Currie.
Doug was born September 2,1940, and lived a full life until his cancer diagnosis. He attended St. Louis College and went on to work at Robin Hood where he met his first love, Mary Osadchuk. They married on August 15, 1959 and soon started a family with the birth of Michele, followed by Leslie and Terri. He made many friends while working at Western Drilling in Moose Jaw and at ITT Grinnell. Doug, a devoted family man, took his family across Western Canada many times on vacations to spend time with their extended family many times. He and Mary devoted their free time to the Sprigs O’ Heather Girls Pipe Band where Doug was band manager. With the pipe band, the family travelled across Canada and the United States, as far east as Nova Scotia, and several trips to Couer D’Alene, Idaho. Doug and Mary loved to travel through B.C. in the fall and would spend their vacations in Kelowna and Vancouver, bringing back all sorts of fruit to share with friends and family.
Doug and Mary relocated to Saskatoon in 1981 where Doug continued his work with ITT Grinnell. Doug was a friendly man, making good friends wherever he lived. Doug enjoyed “puttering” and one of the funniest memories he had was when he lived in Saskatoon and was working in his garage and a stranger came in and asked, “how much do you want for this junk?” thinking that Doug was having a garage sale (he wasn’t).
Doug and Mary re-located to Regina in 1999 and were known for their prolific garden, again sharing the bounty of their harvest with friends and family. Mary passed away in 2005 and soon thereafter Doug found his second love when he met, and then married, Gayle Wirth.
Doug retired from Grinnell in 2007 and enjoyed retirement with Gayle, spending several winters in the Dominican Republic and special visits with their daughter, Tara, in California. Doug and Gayle spent their first years of marriage in White City and then returned to Regina. Doug decided to re-join the workforce and drove for Enterprise, where he embodied the motto, “we’ll pick you up”.
Doug and Gayle spent their golden years together with their fur-baby Daisy and made many friends. Doug continued to enjoy puttering and gardening, being proud of having the best lawn on the block.
After Doug’s cancer diagnosis, he was fortunate to receive compassionate care from his doctors and palliative care nurses. Doug’s family is particularly appreciative of the kindness and compassion extended to him, Gayle and Terri in his last days from the doctors and nurses at the Palliative Care Unit at Pasqua Hospital. There are truly angels among us.
Doug leaves to mourn his passing and will be lovingly remembered by his beloved and cherished wife Gayle and her daughter Tara Marie (Brian) of San, Diego, CA; his daughter Michele (Stephen) and her daughter Taylor, his daughter Leslie (Gary) and her three sons Kevin, Michael and David, daughter Terri (Ron) and her daughter Lauren; his sister Patricia Elliot, and five great- grandchildren.
At Doug’s request, there will be no service. Online messages of condolence may be left at paragonfuneralservices.com.
