Nettie Annie Sokolan
September 14, 1938 – April 15, 2024

The death of Nettie Annie (nee Solar) Sokolan of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Monday, April 15, 2024. She was 85 years of age. Nettie, the oldest of ten siblings, was born to Joseph and Mary (nee Shinkaruk) Solar in Carmel, SK. On May 26, 1956, she married Nick Sokolan. Nick’s job with the railway took them to several communities before they settled their roots in Humboldt in 1969 with their four boys. Nettie’s greatest joy came from being a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and you were sure to never leave her house without having a “little” lunch. Nettie was an avid crocheter and enjoyed teaching that skill to her granddaughters. When she wasn’t busy at home, she devoted time volunteering with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and spent many years calling bingo. Most of all she loved taking care of her family and, in recent years, was overjoyed at being a great-grandmother and would brag frequently of her little “dollies”. Nettie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four sons, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: son Ed (Sandy) and family, Lynn (Tim McVicar) and children, Blair, Hugh and Nick, Kate (Matthew Furneaux) and daughters Harper and Billie, and Niki; son Gary (Tracey) and their sons Joshua (Ditya) and Matthew; son Ron and children Cheryl, Shelby, and Aaron (Megan) and their daughters Palmer and Sage; and son Jeff (Natasha) and children Daria and Zach; five sisters and one brother: Doreen Pape, Sally Lewis, Evelyn Solar, Morris Solar, Elaine Lizotte, and Irene Nicks; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Nick Sokolan (February 5th, 2020); parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Shinkaruk) Solar; two brothers: Metro Solar, and Frank Solar; and by one sister, Mildred Solar. The Prayer Service for Nettie was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK, on Monday, April 22, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Al Hingley and Bev Trach. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. Others taking part were: Lynn Sokolan, crossbearer; Megan Sokolan and Matthew Sokolan, scripture readers; Daria Sokolan, intentions; Cheryl Sokolan, Shelby Sokolan, Kate Furneaux and Ditya Sokolan, giftbearers; and Zach Sokolan and Niki Sokolan, eulogists. Music ministry was provided by director Loretta Schugmann, pianist Carol Esler, and members of the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. An honor guard was formed by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Nettie’s life”. Active pallbearers were Aaron Sokolan, Joshua Sokolan, Matthew Sokolan, Zach Sokolan, Matthew Furneaux, and Tim McVicar. Memorial donations may be directed to STARS – Air Ambulance – Saskatoon Base (Hanger 21, 2475 Airport Road, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 1M4)
