Oswald Christian Leicht
February 27, 1940 – April 27, 2024

It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Mr. Oswald Christian Leicht, 84 years of Spalding, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Humboldt District Hospital with his family by his side.  Oswald was born on February 27, 1940, at his homeplace in the Spalding District, to Theodore and Paulina (nee Losing) Leicht.  Oswald was one of six children. He attended the Clearview School which was near his home. He worked a couple winters in Thompson, MB and one in Prince George, BC, and then the pull of the land brought him back to his parent’s farm where he began his farming career of 42 years.  Oswald met the love of his life, Linda Voldeng, and they were married at Dovre Lutheran Church in Spalding, on July 8, 1967. Together they were blessed two children, Troy and Kim. Farming was his life and he loved everything about it. From checking the germination in the Spring to checking the color change of the canola in the Fall. One thing about the farming, the combines were always red. For the first several years of farming Ozzie farmed with his brother Ben.  In 1977, they purchased one of the first International Harvester Axial Flow combines produced. Only two were made available for sale in Saskatchewan in the first year of production and they got one of them.  Many neighbours thought this was a poor decision as this technology would never work in western Canada. It did. And they purchased a second Axial Flow combine the next year. In 2005, Oswald and Linda retired from active farming and remained on their farmyard and enjoy the peace and tranquility of country living to its fullest.  Now that he was retired, he felt that he knew everything there was to know about gardening. Oswald was very involved with his children’s activities and later with his grandchildren.  Kid’s minor hockey and baseball games and practices were faithfully attended. An indoor rink was built in the barn for a number of years. Later there were bus trips with senior hockey. Oz followed closely all the nephew’s hockey.  Eventually he got to follow Julia’s hockey and fastball and Levi’s hockey and baseball. There was never a visit by Julia or Levi where they were not asked about their hockey and ball games.  As a family they went on many trips: Disneyland, Churchill Polar Bears, skiing and fishing trips. They even experienced a few Blue Jay games in the USA. Camping with the family brought   Oswald much joy when the children were young and later at Barrier Lake with the grandchildren. The fishing trips. Especially the 40 some year tradition of “Leicht Boys Fishing Trip” was always special.
Shared with Ted, brothers, sons, grandsons, nephews, and in-laws at times bordered on “what happens on the fishing trip, stays on the fishing trip”.  The fishing was great, the shore lunches eagerly anticipated, and the card games were at times epic.  But maybe most anticipated were the stories of Oz and his brothers growing up in a totally different day and age than what we live in now. Oswald and Linda attended the Norsk Hostfest in Minot many times with family and friends.  He also enjoyed going to country concerts in the area with friends. “Men of Deep” being his #1 concert. Oswald was a very social person and   enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. Like all farmers, he couldn’t get enough caps. A new cap always was rewarded with a smile, especially a Case IH cap.  Many of the caps set out today are from the teams Troy, Julia, and Levi have played with.  Speaking of red tractors and combines, a toy tractor collection was started many years ago and is massive. The collection of course has a heavy emphasis on the red machines. Collecting took Oz to the Yorkton and Saskatoon farm toy collectable shows numerous times and once to the National Farm Toy Show in Dyersville Iowa.  Ozzie excelled at bowling, won numerous awards, and was a regular at the Spalding Bowling Alley.  Oz also enjoyed golf, and although not nearly as proficient at it as he was bowling, he still managed a hole in one at one of Troy’s provincial ball tournaments in Esterhazy.

Linda, Troy, Bonnie, Julia, Levi and Kim. You were loved so much, and Oswald was so proud to be a husband, father and grandfather.  You were all very special to him.

Oswald will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Linda Leicht of Spalding; his two children and two grandchildren: Troy (Bonnie) Leicht of Naicam and their children Julia and Levi; and Kim Leicht of Yorkton;

Siblings: Ben (Sonia) Leicht of Humboldt, Alex (Audrey) Leicht of Lacombe, AB, Hilda (Eric) Odelein of Quill Lake, Roy (Marlene) Leicht of Melfort, sister-in-law Eleanor Leicht of Prince Albert, and numerous nieces, nephews, and members of the Voldeng family.

Oswald was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Paulina Leicht; brother Raymond Leicht; nephew Lee Odelein; great nephew Jacob Leicht and parents-in-law Jens and Edna Voldeng.

Linda and family wish to sincerely thank everyone who shared in Oswald’s life and thank everyone that was able to attend today and who have reached out them over the recent days. Your support is greatly appreciated.
