The Kenora and surrounding area have experienced one of the driest and hottest summers in recent memory.
The area may be in luck and receive some relief from the heat as this weekend's forecast is calling for rain.
“We are awaiting the cold front to come but certainly the cold front will bring some much-needed cooler air and also some much-needed rain as well,” said Gerald Chang Environment Canada Meteorologist
High percentages of rain are expected to hit the area Friday evening, into Saturday, with a brief break on Sunday and more rain into early next week.
In August the Kenora area has seen a total rainfall of 41 millimetres which is just under half of the 84 millimetre average for the month.
This past week residents have had to brace themselves as temperatures have soared into the low to mid 30’s and even higher with the added humidity.
Chang added the reasoning for the scorching temperatures have been caused by a hot and humid air mass that has situated over Northwestern Ontario.
On Monday, the area broke a 60-year-old heat record when the area reached 32.1 degrees Celsius, which broke the previous record of 30.6 degrees from 1961 and 2003.
Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category.
Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water
Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.
Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
