Jack Edward Ediger


Peacefully, with his family at his side, Jack Ediger passed away on May 11, 2024, at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 81 years.


He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Margy (Jason) Murray of Nova Scotia and Tracy (John Rumpli) Ediger of Portage la Prairie; granddaughters Tiffany (Cody Balcaen) Ediger, with great grandchildren Payton and Brayden, Sydney, and Anika Rumpli; siblings Linda Kuber of Selkirk, Lois (Arnie) Neufeld of Oakbank; sister-in-law Nora Ediger of Glenboro along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife Betty Jean Scott; parents Abram and Mary (nee Spenst) Ediger, Mary’s second husband Hartley McDonald; brother Don Ediger and brother-in-law Elmer Kuber.


Jack was a kind, calm, sweet, gentle soul and a very hard worker. He was born December 1st, 1942; oldest of 4 children. He grew up on the Flee Island Road farm near High Bluff. He attended the one room rural High Bluff school, then PCI and on t the University of Manitoba where he obtained his diploma in agriculture.


He married Betty Jean Scott on June 19, 1965, and bought a house on Yellowquill Drive where he raised his family and welcomed family and friends. Jack worked at Campbell Soup for 10 years then joined Larry Mauws and Ed Bailey on their entrepreneurial ventures; Portage Tire, Custom Home and Leisure, Westward Village Inn, Club West, Roller Rink and Westward Industries. He loved spending time with family, driving to support various sporting events. Jack loved to have an adventure; skidoo racing (where he won the Canadian Championship in 1970), yard work, camping and being involved with the community with such groups as Rotary.


The family is grateful for all the healthcare support from Dr. Quesada, Dr. Workman and Dr. Reitmeier along with all hospital staff on the medical, surgical and rehab wards of the PDGH and the home care staff.


A celebration of Jack’s life will take place on Friday, May 17, 2024 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Hillside Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Jack’s name to Sunset Palliative Care, 40 Royal Rd N, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1V1 or to a charity of your choice.


A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
