Norman Gierl
July 10, 1934 – May 12, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Norman Edmund James Gierl, 89 years, of LeRoy on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Humboldt District Hospital.

Norman was born to Edmund and Mary (nee Weber) on July 10, 1934 in Watson. Norman spent nearly his entire life on the farm. After a short working career, he returned to take over the family farm and start his family. Dad built a new house directly behind the old one, and he used to say, with his dry sense of humour, “I’ve moved 10 feet in my whole life.” He raised four children on the farm and welcomed nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, who all created memories on the farm.

Dad’s unwavering support, whether it be driving around the country to attend sporting events, art shows, car races, or concerts, was incredible and allowed us to pursue our dreams and careers.

His support of his wife Maxine (Mom) through her journey showed his deep love and devotion. Watching the interaction between them during visits to St. Mary’s was both heartbreaking and inspiring.

He not only got to watch his daughters and sons journey through their lives but also relished watching and hearing about the grandkids’ careers and families. One of the great joys was watching “New” Grandpa meet great-grandkids.

Dad appreciated simple pleasures. Watching him admire the walls of the cabin made from wood that he logged and milled brought so much pride.

Through his long life, he became a generational connection to neighbours, family, and friends. He welcomed this role and appreciated their unwavering support in return. Through the condolences, calls, and messages, we are learning about the appreciation people had for him in their lives. Moving forward, we take solace in the extended family we continue to have.

Predeceased by parents Mary and Edmund Gierl and Sister Helen Prickett (Melvin).

Survived by spouse Maxine Gierl (nee Sherven); Sister Rose Koep (Jim); Daughter Pamela Duncombe - Michael (Mercedes), Jillian (Spencer), Katherine (Adam); Son Brian Gierl (Janice), Stephanie (Mike), Erica (Ryan); Son Bill Gierl, Tucker and Son Brydon Gierl (Jennifer), Case, Taylor (Brad), Quinn

The Family wishes to thank all those who’ve sent condolences and well wishes; also, thank you to the staff at the Humboldt District Hospital and the Malinoski and Danyluik Funeral Home for their care and compassion.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in Norman’s memory may be directed to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation Building Fund.
