In Loving Memory of
Marguerite Pauline Marie (Carfantan) Buttinger-Schulzke

January 31, 1943 – May 16, 2024
81 years

It is with great sadness that the family of Marguerite Buttinger-Schulzke announces her passing on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the Humboldt District Hospital surrounded by her four daughters.

Marguerite was born on January 31, 1943 in St. Brieux SK. She grew up as one of 11 children and took her schooling at the convent which was located across the street from their home. There was no shortage of work to be done before and after school and she also babysat and did housework for a few families in St. Brieux while she was growing up.

After school she moved to Saskatoon where she ‘light housekept’ with her lifelong friend Lorrie (Gallays) Marksteiner and worked as a waitress at the King George hotel where she was taught the art of serving with very strict etiquette, which she lived by.

She married Anthony (Butch) Buttinger on October 10, 1964. She often said that when they got married, they didn’t have a kernel harvested yet. Needless to say, there wasn’t much time for a honeymoon as harvest started shortly after their wedding. They lived in their first home in Lake Lenore during which time three of their children were born. They then built their family home on the Buttinger homestead 3 miles west of Lake Lenore where their fourth daughter was born and where she resided until 2009.

Marguerite was an extremely hard worker, raising her family and planting, tending and harvesting a huge garden. She was a member of the CWL, the local Home & School Board as well as served as President for the catering club. She also owned and operated Act II, a ladies clothing store in Humboldt from 1983 until 1986.

Her life changed drastically when Butch died tragically on January 20, 1986. Widowed at 43 years old with two of her children still at home, she took on the many tasks that come along with being a single parent and running a farm. Marg was an organizer and could plan events down to the most miniscule detail. This attribute came in very handy immediately after Butch’s passing as she helped plan her daughter’s wedding as well as took over some of the business ventures that he had been involved in.

In 1988, Marguerite met Wilbert Schulzke of Cudworth and they enjoyed 32 years together. They celebrated 25 years of marriage in January of 2022. She met many new friends and loved having a second family, being a stepmom to Wilbert’s three grown children as well as became step grandma to their kids. Together they loved travelling and their many camping trips each summer. They moved into their new home in Humboldt April of 2009 and made many more new friends with their neighbors and community. In November of 2021 they moved into Caleb Village where they both enjoyed condo living as well as the many activities offered. Unfortunately, Wilbert’s health declined, and he passed away four months after the move on March 6, 2022.

Marg loved to play cards and games. There were many game nights with their friends as well as when the grandkids visited. She was still playing cards weekly with the ‘card ladies’ as well as enjoyed bingo twice a week at Caleb. If she won the blackout all four of her daughters would receive a very excited phone call telling them of her big win, usually amounting to roughly $15!

Marguerite had a long battle with cancer, and she fought it with the bravery and strength of a small village, recovering from two major surgeries as well as various types of treatments. She rarely complained and was only annoyed if she had to take some days off from activities because she wasn’t feeling well enough to attend.

Marguerite is lovingly remembered and will be sadly missed by her children and their families,
