A three-day blitz conducted by inspectors from the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP) and SGI resulted in a significant number of commercial vehicles being removed from the road.
Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspectors conducted 332 vehicle checks at the Langham Weigh Scale from May 13 to 16 as part of the North American Roadcheck initiative. The SHP enforces the provincial Traffic Safety Act and Regulations, targeting violations by all motor vehicles traveling in the province. Officers check vehicle operators for licensing certification, insurance, fatigue, and drug and alcohol impairment.
This led to the removal of 103 vehicles due to cargo security and brake issues. Twelve drivers were removed due to exceeding the hours-of-service limit, false records, license endorsements, and drug impairment. An additional 81 vehicles were found to have mechanical defects requiring immediate repair.
During the blitz, 148 trucks/power units and 82 trailers passed inspection and received CVSA decals, which are applied if no critical violations are detected during eligible inspections.
International Roadcheck is an annual three-day event where CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement, and education initiatives targeting various motor carrier, vehicle, and driver safety elements. It is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with an average of 15 trucks and motor coaches inspected every minute across North America during a 72-hour period.
Since its inception in 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck.
The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol will participate in other CVSA campaigns focusing on safe drivers and brake safety later this year.
