It was a weekend of ups and downs for the Weyburn Beavers.

It started Friday night as they welcomed the Saskatoon Berries to Tom Laing Park for the first time. The expansion franchise was looking for their first win of the season, and were hoping they would get it against the Beavers.

Saskatoon starting pitcher Michael Singleton would limit the Beavers to five hits over seven innings while striking out 8 to help the Berries to the first win in franchise history. At the plate, five different players drove in runs, including Carnduff’s Carter Beck, who was playing in front of friends and family.

Weyburn starting pitcher Ryan Meyer had eight strikeouts himself, but also game up five earned runs on 10 hits through 6 1/3 innings of work. At the plate, the Beavers were held to just six hits, with Robert Gurney getting the lone extra-base hit.

After a late night at the Sports Dinner Saturday, the Beavers were off early to head to Moose Jaw for a matinee game against the Miller Express on Sunday. The time spent bonding over the course of the dinner seemed to have some immediate payoff, though, as the Beavers topped the Miller Express 10-6 for their first road win of the season.

Niko Kekatos led the way for the Beavers with a home run, a double, and three RBI. He added in a stolen base as well. Also driving in three runs was Carter Schellsmidt, with the other RBIs coming from Quinten Smith, Ryan Dauphinee, Ryan Webster, Tyren Dorrance, and Ethan Mould.

On the mound, starting pitcher Ian Heck went five innings, striking out four and allowing three earned runs. Tanner Coddington would be credited with the win, pitching two innings in relief with three strikeouts and one hit allowed. Aiden Maas would allow two earned runs in 1/3 inning of work, while Joe Hart finished the game off, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Beavers will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Swift Current to face the 57s. The two teams will first finish a game from May 26th that was halted in the third inning due to rain. The Beavers were up 8-3 at the time play was suspended. After finishing that game, the teams will then play a seven-inning game.
