The Weyburn Beavers would get 10 hits off a solid Regina Red Sox pitching staff at Tom Laing Park last night and had six runs come across the plate. It wouldn’t be enough, though, as the Red Sox capitalized on a five-run third inning to come away with a 12-6 victory over the home side.
“They came out ready to hit from the get-go,” said Beavers’ head coach Cam Williams after the game. “We took one from their yard last week, and I think they’re kind of p***** off about that, and came out ready to play. I said (to the players) we didn’t do a great job of responding to that, but we play them a lot. We got eight more against them, and I know we’ll have a response next time we play them.”
The Beavers would have no trouble getting players on base, with the 10 hits and also drawing five walks. However, getting those runners home proved to be a challenge at times, with 10 runners left on the basepath over the course of the night.
One of the bright spots was the play of Ryan Muizelaar. The second year Beaver from Grand Forks, North Dakota had a great game, with four hits, including two doubles, and adding three RBI. He also added a stolen base to the stat line.
Ian Heck added a double himself, along with Tyren Dorrance, who came in to pinch-hit for Heck in the 9th inning. Heck’s double also extended his hitting streak to six games, while Muizelaar has had a hit in the past three.
Niko Kekatos also had a strong night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
On the mound, the Beavers would find themselves down early after the third inning. Starting pitcher Tyler Pechetti would be credited with the loss, as he gave up eight earned runs in five innings while striking out two. Angel Fragozo came on in relief, and while he did give up four earned runs on six hits, he also struck out six batters in his three innings of work. Logan Wortman then finished the game off, allowing one hit and no runs.
The Beavers will now get ready to play the Swift Current 57s in Swift Current tonight as they try to finish a game originally started on May 26th, and then play a game originally scheduled on June 4th. Both of those games had been postponed due to the rain.
“It’s weird to say that we’re kind of looking forward to getting back on the road,” laughed Williams. ”We’re playing well on the road right now, and I think we’re 3-1, and we’re up in one of the games to finish, and I guess I think it’ll be a good chance to right the ship.”
The game from May 26th had the Beavers up 8-3 in the third inning when the game was suspended, and that is where they will be picking things up. They will complete the full nine innings of that game, and then play a seven-inning game to make up for the one originally scheduled for June 4th.
The Beavers will be back at Tom Laing Park on Friday, as they host the Moose Jaw Miller Express. They then play the Saskatoon Berries on Saturday, before closing out the week on the road, in Saskatoon, on Sunday.
