With sadness we announce that Corinne McDiarmid passed away on June 28, 2024, at Portage la Prairie at the age of 75.
She is survived by her cousins and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Monica and Stuart McDiarmid and her brother Jimmy.
Corinne was born in Flin Flon. She was a healthy baby, but after a bout of measles as an infant, her development was affected. She went to a special school in Flin Flon till age 12. However, it became evident that her parents could no longer support her at home. There were few options available for families of children with intellectual disabilities in those days. Corinne went to the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie to live.
As MDC is closing, Corinne moved to a group home in Portage managed by Visions of Independence. She handled the transition well and was happy in her new home. It is fortunate that more supports are now available for families of individuals with special needs, and that vaccines are available to prevent childhood diseases such as measles that can still have devastating effects.
Corinne had a great sense of humour, a stubborn will and a mischievous nature. She was well loved by those who cared for her over many years, and her family is so grateful for this.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed and may be viewed by registering at the link below.
