After coming away from their road trip to Alberta without a win, the Weyburn Beavers were looking for a game at home to bounce back, and get into the win column. They entertained the Moose Jaw Miller Express at Tom Laing Park and gave Ian Heck the start on the mound. Moose Jaw, however, took advantage of some miscues in the first two innings to open up a big lead and held on for a 10-4 victory.
“I think we kind of came out a little bit flat, which is disappointing coming off a long road trip and being back at home, but sometimes that happens,” Cam Williams, head coach of the Beavers, said after the game. “I think that we just didn’t give ourselves much of a chance, but I know the guys will respond well tomorrow.”
Heck would go five innings on the mound, striking out six, and walking five. He also surrendered six runs, three of those earned, on six hits. Angel Fragozo came on in relief, striking out two in one inning of work but giving up two runs, one earned. Mathieu Rocheleau would pitch the next two innings, striking out one and giving up two runs. Brett Paterson then pitched the ninth inning, striking out one.
At the plate, Niko Kekatos, Ryan Webster and Easton Mould all had multiple hit games. Webster even added in a double. Mould drove in two runs, with an RBI also credited to Ryan Muizelaar.
The Beavers, who are now 7-22 on the season and have dropped 12 straight, will be back on the road, heading to Swift Current to play the 57s. The Beavers are back at home next Monday when the Medicine Hat Mavericks are in town.
