It has become an ever-popular tradition over the past 35 years and is making a return this year. The Government of Saskatchewan has announced Free Fishing Weekend will be returning on July 13th and 14th.
The weekend allows Saskatchewan residents, as well as visitors to the province, to fish in public waters that are open to sport fishing without a licence.
"Saskatchewan is known for its world-class sportfishing," Environment Minister Christine Tell said. "Free Fishing Weekend is a great time for those new to angling to join the fun and discover what our province has to offer."
There are a few exceptions to the free fishing weekend. It doesn’t apply in national parks, those who are planning on taking their catches out of the province are required to purchase a license, and rules surrounding catch limits, allowed equipment, and more.

Free Fishing Weekend was first launched in 1989 as a way to increase the public’s awareness about angling opportunities in the province. In 2015, a winter Free Fishing Weekend was added as well.
