The first heat wave of the year has arrived in southeast Saskatchewan.
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Estevan and surrounding communities. Temperatures are expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius for the next 3-5 days, according to the weather agency. Humidity will also be a factor that will add to the heat, as humidex values of 35 degrees can be expected. The weather agency is predicting these conditions will last until the weekend before the temperature cools slightly.
With extreme heat comes extreme risks for everyone. Environment Canada noted that while the heat wave affects everyone, vulnerable communities might see a greater impact. Older people, those who are pregnant, infants, people with disabilities or mobility issues might see higher health risks.
The agency recommends drinking plenty of water and to stay hydrated. Also, watch out for signs of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
