The heat wave in the southeast didn’t dampen the sizzling start to this year's Golden West's Taste of Summer charity BBQ season.
The Estevan Public Youth Centre (EPYC) was the first non-profit to benefit from the proceeds to support its summer programming. EPYC executive director Merissa Scarlett said she was very happy with the turnout.
“I love seeing so many people and just giving us a little more help than even just the $5, so that was a huge help,” Scarlett said.
The BBQ, which included a hot dog, cookies, and a drink for $5, brought in $918, with Mid-City Plumbing lending their parking lot for the event.
EPYC also currently has an agreement with the City of Estevan, which will match the youth center’s fundraising proceeds up to $10,000. In total, that means $1,800 is being raised for the center.
The money will be beneficial for their EPYC Olympics, but also to keep the kids cool throughout the summer months. Scarlett added they are also hosting a few family events near the end of the summer, and the funds can add to the fun by providing food and games for the events.
“Just getting those families in the door and seeing where their youth have been hanging out for the past couple of months,” she said.
The next BBQ will take place next Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in support of the Royal Canadian Legion #60 Estevan.
