The immigration services act for Saskatchewan came into effect on July 1st. Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison Said "Saskatchewan continues to attract newcomers from all over world" he adds that "this strengthened legislation will enhance Saskatchewan's ability to protect foreign workers as they arrive, streamline processing for employers, and set new standards for integrity"
The new Immigration Services Act replaces the Foreign Worker and Immigration Serves Act. The new act brings all authorities related to immigration in Saskatchewan under one piece of legislation. The new legislation is to ensure that Saskatchewan can attract and retain the labour force required to support growing economy and communities as well as changing needs.
The Regina Open Door Society says they are encouraged by the changes. Communications Manager Victoria Flores said "By enhancing regulatory oversight and legal protections, the act helps us better serve and safeguard the interests of those arriving in the province"
The new act provides better protection to foreign workers against exploitation and enhances oversight of recruiters, immigration consultants and employers. The Immigration Serves Act will also give the Government of Saskatchewan increased investigative authority and enforcement measures to tackle immigration fraud as well as implementing the highest fines for violators in the country.
