Estevan Southern Impact, an arm wrestling club in Estevan, is hosting an Open House Practice & Appreciation BBQ on July 20. The event aims to raise awareness about the sport of arm wrestling and the club itself. One of the club's founding members, Desiree De Silva joined the SUN 102 morning show to invite the community to the event.
The club, which currently boasts 18 members, was formed in 2023. “It actually started out of my garage,” De Silva said. “And now we are in the Flawless Sales and Services Ltd. shop at 216 Souris Ave, thanks to our gracious sponsor, Dan Driedger.”
The club is open to everyone, regardless of age or size. “It’s just a good environment. You just come and enjoy your time. It doesn’t matter what size you are, you don’t even have to feel strong, once you know how to do it, it’s easy,” De Silva explained.
The club is also raising funds for new tables to accommodate its growing membership. “We do have provincial and national competitions. There are also competitions across the world that use a certain table and it has certain requirements for heights. And, how you stand at the table will change depending on which table you use,” De Silva explained. Despite these professional aspects, participation doesn't require prior experience or professional aspirations—everyone is welcome to join in for fun and camaraderie.
The Open House Practice & Appreciation BBQ is a free event that starts at 1:00 PM. Attendees can test their strength at the table, enjoy burgers and pop for $5, and participate in a ‘King of the Table’ match. “Anybody can participate in that. You put down $10 and then you just do an around-the-world kind of thing, go against different people of all different sizes and the strongest wins. And, they win 50% of the profits,” De Silva said.
